Hi! It´s time to show you the progress of my Pearl. Now the main deck is finished, also the sidewalls, the gunports and the wall to the captains cabin. In the instructions most of these parts should only get black painting, of cause I modified this a little bit. Next work is to do some detail work in the captains cabin. Best regards, Bernd der Gohfelder attached the following image(s):

Bernd Your doing an excellent build of this ship. Your painting techniques really give the ship the look of being very old - very clever. Hope your Christmas is going well and hope you have many more happy model making days in 2014. Kind regards Tony Happy Modelling

Hi Stevie! Thank you very much! I only get one delivery per month with a few parts, so there is only a small progress each time. But also that´s the reason why I have time to look what can (or better:should) be modified Regards, Bernd

Hi Bernd Be lonely no more, I have just subscribed to this from Hachette UK ( just couldn't resist ), I found it when looking to purchase more issues for my Tiger and Hood builds. I checked the forum to see if anyone was building this ship and found your build diary, I must say that your build is fantastic, I don't know how I missed it. Will be collecting issues for a few months before starting to build it. Looking forward to seeing more of your build. Regards Dallas (Taz). “Count your age by friends, not years. Hi Taz! Collecting the issues some month is a good decision. In this case you can build it your own way. If you get the instructions in the same style as the german version, don´t worry. I think it´s made for children and it´s not very good, sometimes it´s better to build it another way. Working with MDF is OK, sometimes you need powerglue because the usual glue is not working very good. In Russia they are nearly finished with this model, I can give you a link where you can see the content of nearly all issues (of cause with russian text) Regards, Bernd

One thing to be very mindful of when building any kit that contains MDF is the use of a mask during sanding is a must and preferably done outdoors.

Hi! It´s correct, the MDF is to be used with care. I hope the english instruction have a health warning, in Germany nothing is written. Regards, Bernd

Hi! Now I´ve worked a little bit at the captains cabin, I hope you like it. By the way: it´s my first ship model with gunports in the captains cabin but - it´s the Black Pearl and nothing is impossible Regards, Bernd der Gohfelder attached the following image(s):

MDF is very nice to work with but as Jase and Tomick have mentioned, respiratory precaution must be taken, good mask with good ventilation or dust extraction. It's the binding agent that is the carcinogen (urea-formaldehyde) If your MDF is marked that this binder is not used then it's perfectly safe and the same precautions apply as any softwood (mask due to the light fibres etc) Steve
