Thanks Steve, Ian and Jase for your nice comments.
I have just shaped a couple of parts from styrene sheet and fixed them to the bow and stern. Also a touch of yellow ochre paint to give a bit of detail.

More soon.

Alan

Have made the thwarts from 0.75 X 2.5 mm styrene strip and temporarily laid in place.

The mast brackets were made from thin copper strip, cut down to 0.75mm wide and bent to shape.

Next update soon.

Thanks Ian,
Much appreciated.

Well, the PE parts arrived from Germany this morning (Saturday) and among them was the sheet of gratings I had ordered for the ships boats.

There are four sizes on the sheet, starting at the bottom of the photo above with 1mm square
then 0.75mm, 0.5mm and 0.4mm.
For the boats I wanted the 0.5mm grating and cut it to shape using templates made from thin card to get the internal shape of the hull. Once I hade cut the grating, I made and the edging from 1mm X 0.5mm styrene strip, glued it to the grating and tried a test fit.

After a couple of coats of paint, they were ready to be fixed permanently.

Next I painted and fixed the thwarts that I had made earlier, plus the port and starboard ones at the stern.

Next I will make the rear davit and the central windlass.
More soon.
Regards
Alan

Hi all,
Another small update on the launch.
Have made and fitted the stern davit support beams from 1.5mm square styrene.

I have noticed that the planking detail on some of the hulls I will be using is a bit faint and on the launch I have a mid section that is plain due to the inserted styrene extension. So I have tried to re-define the planking using thin strips of masking tape.

Not sure if I should try to seal this first before painting, as I have never tried it before, so any advice would be welcome.

Regards
Alan

Hi all,
More on the launch. I have spent tonight making the stern davit.
Started with a piece of 2.5mm square styrene and filed to shape.

For the pulley I used some small plastic discs,

I think they are sequins, we were clearing out some cupboards and drawers the other week and found these in a box of buttons etc, I think they were my late mother in law's and my daughters used to play with them,
I immediately ear marked them for the pulleys on the bowsprit but they are getting a run out
sooner than I thought BigGrin
In the same box were some really small oval beads that I think I can use to represent the mouses in the rigging.

I digress, anyway, I glued the smaller disc inside the two larger ones then filed them down to a smaller diameter. Once I had the size, I formed the locating recess in the top of the davit.

A test fit using 0.6mm brass micro tubing for the pin and I have a working pulley.

The parts were disassembled for painting. Once dry I refitted the pulley with a shorter pin.
Below are some photos of the davit in position.

I made it a tight fit between the support beams so that it would stay in place without glue as I think on the real boat it would have been stowed away when not in use, so when it sits on the skid beams it will be inside the boat.

Windlass up next BigGrin
Regards
Alan

Here we go with the windlass.
I started with a length of 2.5mm square styrene strip.
After making a working pulley on the stern davit I couldn't NOT make a working windlass, so the first job was to get the brass pins central and fitted in each end. It would have been heart breaking to do all the shaping first only to mess up on the pin holes and have to start again and as it happens, it took two attempts to get it right.

Once I was happy with the pins I marked out the areas to be shaped and went to work with small files and sanding block.

Next I made a couple of brackets from 1.5 X 0.5mm styrene and fixed one to the inside of the hull. I had to make a small rebate in this one to ride over a small blob of glue that I didn't want to risk trying to remove, once its painted and behind the windlass, I don't think it will show.

The idea is that once the parts are all painted, I can locate one pin into this bracket, fit the other bracket over the pin at the opposite end of the windlass, lower and fix in place.
Like I have done for the test fit in the photo below, but without gluing.

They say you can't fit a square peg into a round hole, but with the aid of a small diamond file, I managed it for the turning poles BigGrin

I made these from 0.75mm square styrene strip. They are not perfect as they were very flimsy
and I could not excerpt too much pressure on them with the files etc, but they will do for now until I find something better for the job.
Below are a couple of photos just to show that the windlass does turn.BigGrin

Alan

You don't realize how much you take your fingers for granted until you can't use them properly.
Everything takes twice as long to do, like typing this post Laugh
Hope to be back on the build in a couple of days.
Thanks again and regards to all.
