Thanks Benny! OK then, Royal Navy Guns. Out of the 32lb Long Gun and the 68lb Carronade, which required the fewer number of crew? And which had the higher rate of fire and why? Best of luck Robin First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

Robin Ok total guess i am going for carronade as having fewer crew and had the higher rate of fire because it took longer to recoil and load the long gun ?? “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Right on both counts Jase! The carronade was quicker as you say because of the shorter barrel and also because of the design of the carriage. The carronade could only recoil back along the slider groove and could simply be pushed aound its front pivot to aim. The long guns could easily swerve sideways when they recoiled which required extra crew to manhandle them back in line with big wooden 'crowbars'. Well done and over to you. Where is the expression ' Cock Up' from and why Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
|

Hi All Best answer this then . When an arrow shaft was fletched one of the flight feathers used was a cock feather the other two were not. So when firing the arrow from a bow the cock feather should be the top most vertical this ensures a straight and true flight to the target but if the arrow was loaded with out checking properly or in a panic it could fly to the left or right so this lead to the saying 'its a cock up' shortened to 'cock up'. And that's the answer Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
