Think this bit is going to be extremely delicate and time consuming..... Fingers crossed all goes well..... .. Thanks again.. Regards Alan

Steve Thanks Steve, mag just shows where the holes are to be and does give instructions. Problem is with the curved bulkheads but more importantly I feel it will be a very very delicate operation especially at the tops of the bulkheads where it will be the weakest and with too heavy a hand will probably break away very easily.... Formulating a plan so will see how it develops. If it works out then at least I can show others following on behind how to achieve it... .. Fingers crossed it all works out.... Regards Alan

Hi everyone, well thought I would make a start at least on cutting out the 12mm gun ports on the curved bulkheads... Gave it some thought and decided I would post my progress for all to see, warts an all.... .. First thing I did was to lay strips of masking tape up the bulkheads, this was done for two reasons, the first was to allow me to mark up on the tape rather than the bulkhead itself. This was any mistakes would mean simply removing the tape and applying a new strip.... Second reason was in thinking the tape over the top would help to hold the delicate tops in place during the cutting stage... .. Next was to first drill 2mm pilot holes and ensuring all was good before continuing... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Moved on to cutting the first gun port, this one I started with a round fine file and slowly started widening the hole... then continued using a fine half round file constantly checking for position and of course fit.... .. The second hole was slightly different in that with with dremel I used a 2mm reamer and very carefully widened the hole finishing off with the fine half round file.... .. Dry fitted in place and have to say am very happy with how it actually went... Once the décor is fitted proper then the edges will be tidied up with some modellers putty and of course a touch up with paint.. Some very minor damage to the inner bulkhead but nothing that can't be easily repaired.. .. Final pic shows the tools I used..... More tomorrow, hopefully will get some finished over the course of the weekend... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Moved on a little this evening and now have 4 of the bulkhead gun ports cut out with no mishaps.... really needed to take care during this process to make sure the tops didn't give way, could feel them moving... .. Painted some of the decoration rings firstly with a coat of metal primer followed by 3 coats of the metallic gold... When dry fitted in position using serious glue... .. Carefully filled the surround with modellers putty and finished off by tidying up everything with a coat of matt black and a touch up with the gold.... .. Really happy with how its turned out and am happy with the process... Hope it will help some of the others following on behind..... ... Now for the other 7 and that will take time.. Happy building all.. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi Alan. That's coming on really well there! Cutting largish holes in planked walls is one of the hardest jobs of all and some damage to the inner face is almost unavoidable! I use the diamond dust type files wherever possible as they tend to be kinder to the reverse side of the wood than the traditional 'toothed' variety. My set came from the local "Tool Shed" shop, I can't remember if they were on the £1 section or maybe £1.99 from the dearer shelf (I try not to go there!) There's also a set of diamond dust rotary tools which might be handy (in moderation!), made by JAK from the same shop, 10 set was £1 I think the larger 20 set (including grinding disks was either £1.99 or £2.99, well worth it though as they last a very long time! Keep it up M8 Robin First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

Keep it up M8 Robin Hi Robin, thanks for those positive comments.... You are absolutely spot on, cutting largish holes in planked walls especially round ones is something I am finding extremely tricky. Probably the hardest task I have found to date but at the same time a great learning experience which I hope other first timers can take lessons from... .. All considering, I am very happy with the first finished gun port although I still have the inner walls to do and am thinking I may just remove the planks and replank the lot.... .. Now on the hunt for diamond dust files and diamond dust rotary tools.. appreciate your guidance and tips.... Best regards Alan
