Hi All,

May have missed something seriously stupid, but, hit a minor snag with the gun port lining.

I have cut the gun ports as per the size shown: 13mm wide x 12mm high.

So far so good.

Now I`ve given a very light sanding to the wood strips in part 39 and painted them as instructed.

Instructions then say to fit a 13mm strip top and bottom of the port, still no issue at this point.

Instructions then say to fit a vertical strip to each side of the port that is 10mm in length, now this is where the issue arises.

The distance between the top and bottom lining pieces is only 9mm.

When I measure the thickness of the strip wood supplied in issue 39 it is 1.5mm thick, so when you put two of these in place you take up 3mm of the 12mm space and only leave a 9mm gap not a 10mm gap.


So I see two possibilities:

1: Sand all the strips down by 1/2 a mm along there whole length.

OR

2: Fit 9mm strips to the sides of the ports as it won`t make any difference.

Any advice would be very gratefully accepted, or if I`m being a total plonker then say so (No offence will be taken)




Luckily I have spotted this on the first port I`ve tried to line and removed the bits before they set, so no harm done.

Hi Del, I didn't actually batch cut the lengths for sides of the gun ports, I fitted each one individually to make sure I got the best fit possible... Did find depending on the port in question and the curvature of the hull the top strip was set further in than the bottom strip, this meant the tops and bottoms of the side strips had to be cut at slight angles to ensure a good fit... hope you follow what I am getting at.... .. Cutting and fitting each side piece in turn for me was the best way forward.... .. Hope this helps....

Thanks for taking the time to take a look and check.

I wasn`t batch cutting, but cut the first side piece to 10mm expecting it to be a very close fit.

Just shows how wrong you can be when you assume something

It was when the side piece showed up to be 1mm to large that I started investigating and found the cause.(strip wood 1.5mm thick not 1mm)

Looks to me not to be an issue now as the gun ports will be open.
