Hello everyone, I have reached a stage on hms victory where I need to build a shelf before I can proceed so putting that job off I thought Id build something from the stash. This is Revell's 1/24 scale Trabant 601 - it's a car you either love or hate, I personally like them but then again I used to own a 1968 beetle The kit itself is short on parts as there is no engine to build on this one, there is a later version of this kit with an engine. So, this is not so much a build diary but more of a testing ground for some new rusting techniques that I have thought up while messing about with my daughters chemistry set - using Iron filings. So to start with the obligatory box shot - btw, this is a 1990 mold and as I said there is a later kit which is much, much better in every way - Its the one with the white Trabbi on the box. The parts my early kit were very badly flashed and poor fitting as well. stevie_o attached the following image(s):

As I said, this is going to be weathered with bad rusting and placed in a simple scene on a street, parked up in a bay - im going to turn it into a ratty looking east german taxi circa 1989,so just before unification as Im going to use the "DDR" plates. First job was to wash and prime the 1 piece body, but before priming I set to work on it with a dremmel This provides nice rough areas for the rust to be placed later. Just to point out I did some of these stages a couple of days ago so I will be updating a lot today! stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Thanks Jase and Foz , hope you like the end result - like I said I have progressed much further than what I have shown so far, just getting my photos in some sort of order to put on here. I wanted my Trabbi to be white, if you are doing a rust experiment then you need to see the rust so any light colour car will look good. Next was building the wheels (no vinyl tyres in this kit) and getting all the white parts sprayed. I deliberatly wanted a non perfect base coat of paint so I used a satin white but sprayed it with a cold can in an even colder garage - this gave a slight orange peel effect and the roughness with take the grime washes and rust better.

I posted the last entry without pics so here they are - btw - I masked the one panel at the front as I want this to look like a new replacement The glass in the last pic was horrible to fit, completely the wrong shape so I will tidy this up later stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Hi! A very nice model, I like it!! Only one small mistake: the body of the Trabant was made of Duroplast, so there can´t be rust Regards, Bernd

The duroplast was so tough that they had to invent a bacteria to break it down otherwise there was no way to dispose of it, thats what I heard anyway. Steve

That´s why the Trabant is called "Rennpappe" in Germany. Free translated: "racing cardbord" Regards, Bernd

Im using this kit as its the quickest build I have, I do have a Tamiya 1966 beetle that I want to rust up but this kit is the practice piece. I might have known it would be you to spot this before I mentioned it though I have changed the thread title just for you Steve

Got my pics in the right order now, I'm currently working on the display base and a figure to go with it and will update later, the car is nearly complete, just some more little details to add and another dirt wash over the rust - told you this was a quickie - only taken 3 days to the stage shown below as I used overnight time to cure the iron filings. The inside was very simple, just seats and dashboard - I lost the steering wheel and had to make one from wire, you can just see the join in one pic, I also broke the roof rack but made that with wire too The fine parts were very brittle maybe due to age of this actual kit (24 years). stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Here is the 1st wash layer using vallejo model color black. The wheel rust is not yet complete either, this is the result of iron filings and pva glue left overnight,it is obviously real rust but is dark as this is the oldest base layer of rust. If I re-wetted it and left overnight again it would turn more orangey but I will do this later Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Hi Steve, Firstly I thought looks good. Then thought, heck pop down to Halfords, get some Rust-cure and problem solved. You could also leave a wing or a door panel with the red primer to show the owner was at least trying to save it. Nah, love it. Some very good distressing work coming on there. WTG mate, the rusty wheel looks the part too. Nice one. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Thank you Del.....I think Here are some pics of the iron filings after a night, same as the wheels. As you can see the rust is very dark at this stage but this will be sorted out later with a couple of dabs of ak interactive rust followed by a last touch of tamiya clear orange... more coming up soon Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Here are some more pics of rust, I have progressed further than this now and the base is also complete but not taken the pics yet. The rust is now more orange but the original iron filings are still visible as the darker areas simulating the older rust. Try getting them wheelnuts off stevie_o attached the following image(s):
