I've noticed in the instructions on planking that when laying the 5th plank (stern) the last few millimetres have to be tapered by 1.5 mm. I'd just like to know why before carrying this out. Is is to level it with the middle deck?

It is to aid fitting the planks . You have a bigger area to cover in the center of the hull than at the stern. Tapering helps ease the overcrowding of planks. Nothing to do with deck position.
