Thanks Benny! Ok, its turning colder this weekend so here's a Cold War one! Before the advent of the U2 and Blackbird spy planes, the US of A had nothing which could evade the Soviet Union's air defences. Fortunately, WE DID! In a top secret deal which was only revealed a few years ago, the RAF flew all the spy missions for the CIA and US Intelligence in the world's fastest and highest flying bomber of the time - (usual story, we did all the work, we took all the risks, they got all the credit!) Simple question, what was the name of the aircraft which the Ruskies couldn't catch? An RAF aquaintance once told me 'those damned things were never meant to fly! Well done again Benny! It was indeed the Canberra bomber! I never realised how advanced this aircraft was at the time, in fact it was so good that the US even adopted it for their own squadrons until their homegrown aviation industry could catch up to us!! Lancaster, Halifax & Wellington. Although you could argue there is 4 if you include the Manchester. at last correct jase but on the Manchester she was only twin engine and don't think she was classed as heavy bomber but who knows. benny

Without looking it up I think I remember an Anthony Fokker? He who went on to copy the Sopwith Triplane and create the Fokker Triplane. There was a French pilot who first fitted steel plates to his prop blades to stop the guns shooting it off but that was more of a 'deflector gear' (there was always the possibility of the bullet 'deflecting' right back at the pilot too!) Thanks for that!! Ok, here's one based on the popular "Coast" series! My contact lens cleaner contains a nasty chemical called Hydrogen Peroxide. During the 1960,s thousands of gallons of this stuff was consumed on the Isle of Wight but, (since this IS the aviation quiz), nothing actually got airborne at the time it was consumed. What was the Hydrogen Peroxide used for?
