Had a good couple of sessions during the last few evenings and have managed to attach all of the railings on the poop deck and upper quarterdeck..... Top rails were all stained with 2 coats of Walnut stain and the uprights coated with medium oak... Cool Cool All fitted together quite well but there was some fine tweaking to be done to get everything to sit nicely.... Post holes needed careful filing as the fit for the posts was pretty tight....Blink Blink .. Some areas such as the upper quarterdeck rails I found quite fiddly due to the uprights only being 5.5mm in length.... Cool Cool .. This now concludes issue 69 and as I am unlikely to receive issue 70 until Friday, this gives me a few evenings where I can do some work on the Titanic.....Cool Cool .. Happy building all.....

Regards

Alan

Nice surprise today when I went to the newsagents only to be told issue 70 was there waiting for me, means I could continue to do a little more work on her.... First thing on the agenda was to complete the closed hatch. Cut 6 pieces of the supplied sappele each of 21mm, glued them across the hatchway ensuring all was square.. When it was done I really didn't think the sappele suited the rest of the build so decided to give it a coat of walnut stain, much happier with the outcome and think it blends in better... Cool Cool Coat of matt clear varnish before fitting the hinges and handle.....

Moved on to making up 2 of the 3 gratings sets and again I substituted the supplied 2mm for 1mm gratings. While waiting them to set I stained the sides of the steps and a 3mm strip walnut. Dry fitted the first grating before moving on to the next... Dry fitted the second grating and cut out the hatch for the steps. Also found it easier to line the opening before fitting. Glued the grating in place and finally fitted the walnut edging. Cool Cool .. Haven't glued the first grating yet, wanted to use that hatch to assist in fitting the steps when the time comes. Next session will move onto fitting the bow grating and of course the steps..

Happy building all...

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a very happy and prosperous New Year...

Best regards

Alan

Moved on a little today. Made up and fitted the hatchway steps on the quarterdeck, fitted the second hatchway and attached the framing...Cool Cool .. Made up the final grating kit for the forecastle and while waiting for that to set I applied 2 strips of masking tape along each side of the hull ensuring it lay along the mid line of the gun ports... Marked on the upper edge of the masking tape the mid point between each gun port ready for drilling and the attaching of the eyelets and rings... Cool Cool .. Next session, complete the hatchway on the forecastle, make up the steps and fit then work on fitting the rings....Cool Cool

Happy building all..

Regards

Alan

Hi there Alan!

Looking great! They sure kept their seamen lean to get down the hatches in those days!!BigGrin

Just a quick query, when you say
"Marked on the upper edge of the masking tape the mid point between each gun port ready for drilling and the attaching of the eyelets and rings", what are the eyelets and rings for? And when you say 'mid point' do you mean the exact centre of the actual gun port or the mid point between two gunports?
On the Vic there is an eyebolt set back on the deck from each gunport (on its centre line)for the running in/out tackle but nothing 'mid point' between the ports.
I think I'm just getting confused between mid points and betweens but I thought I'd check just in case!Blushing

She's really going to be a beautiful Lady when she's 'fully clothed' and a great credit too!

Happy New Year!
