Plymouth57 wrote:Hi there Alan! Looking great! They sure kept their seamen lean to get down the hatches in those days!! Just a quick query, when you say "Marked on the upper edge of the masking tape the mid point between each gun port ready for drilling and the attaching of the eyelets and rings", what are the eyelets and rings for? And when you say 'mid point' do you mean the exact centre of the actual gun port or the mid point between two gunports? On the Vic there is an eyebolt set back on the deck from each gunport (on its centre line)for the running in/out tackle but nothing 'mid point' between the ports. I think I'm just getting confused between mid points and betweens but I thought I'd check just in case! She's really going to be a beautiful Lady when she's 'fully clothed' and a great credit too! Happy New Year! Robin Robin, only hired the lean and mean for this fighting machine..... .. At least I know the difference between my betweens and midpoints... . To clarify, the top edge of the masking tape runs along a line from the centre of one port to the centre of the next and so on..... Marked on the top edge of the masking tape the midway points between gunports, that's where the holes will be drilled for the rings... .. Been looking at Sephtons book and I cannot find any explanations for what the rings were actually used for. Some of the photos contained in the book had these rings whilst others didn't so I really cannot answer your question... Maybe there are others in the forum with far more nautical knowledge than I who can hopefully shed some light as to their possible use.... .. Thanks again for the kind words and a happy new year to you too..... Regards Alan

Continued today with shaping and fitting of the forecastle hatchway and glued into position.... While waiting for it to set I moved onto making up the hatchway steps... Fitted the hatchway surrounds followed by the steps themselves... Was a little concerned I could inadvertently let the steps fall into the hatch which would be difficult to recover. To avoid the problem I threaded a piece of fishing line between the steps and found this aided the fitting... Moved onto drilling the .5mm holes between the gunports on the upper edge of the masking tape. Took the rings and threaded them onto a length of fishing line, dipped the rings into ammonia to remove any possible contamination, rinsed them off and dried before dipping them into some krick solution to blacken. Did the same with the eyelets.... .. Made up the rings by attaching a ring to eyelet and finally with a drop of CA attached to the hull. All rings now fitted... That brought issue 70 to a close and the build will now go on hold until the release of the next issue on Wed, that's when I move onto fitting the rudder I believe... .. Will now spend some time working on the Titanic..... Happy building all..... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi Alan. As I thought, I did have completely the wrong end of the stick! Your last set of photos explained it all! I had visions of you drilling the holes for those ring bolts midway between the gunports on the deck not on the hull! That's why I was worried as I couldn't see any point to having them there! Mind you, I still can't see any point to having them on the hull in that position either! Only explanation I can come up with is that they expected her to capture so many enemy ships that they put in dozens of towing hitches to bring them home with!!! I must admit though it does set the hull off really nicely! Keep them coming! Started work on issue 71 which is the making up and fitting of the rudder... Cleaned off all the black ash, planked the rudder with walnut strip and the upper 46mm with sapelle, that including the edging.... .. Tomorrow will give it all a fine sanding and will start the process of applying coats of varnish to match the hull.... Will also make a start on making the gudgeons and pintels including blackening..... Happy building all... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
