A group of Indonesian archeologists has discovered what is believed to be the wreck of a German U-boat that sank during World War II lying on the floor of the Java Sea about 100 kilometers from Karimunjawa Island.

A nice find for any relatives in Germany but I don't think entering the hull of an official war grave will go down well
regards
Andy

Far worse is the fact they wanted to lift her,the dead should remain where they have lain in peace for nearly 70 years.

I agree the work to find the Sub should be commended as relatives have a grave site but other than documenting it it should not be disturbed.

I think there would be worldwide condemnation should they try to raise her.... site should be marked for the relatives and the wreck left alone as a war grave and protected by the international community....

Hi, Here is a really interesting story that my dad told me. He was in the navy as a young man as a signaller but eventually became trained as a navy diver. After the navy he started a salvage company & worked in the waters around Singapore & Malaysia. My 2 older brothers were born there in 1969 & 71.Around that time my dads company discovered the U859 wreck in those waters. If you google U859 & check wikipedia you can read the story.I've also seen the newspaper cuttings he saved about this. The uboat was carrying tons of mercury bound for Japan to make weapons for the war.He applied for permission to attempt to salvage this mercury but was told it belonged to Germany. Also, the costs involved to salvage were huge.Bit of a bummer really as it would have made him a millionaire.Stu.
