Hi and thanks for the comments.
Right then, the 1st planking is now complete and it's been a dusty day here giving it another smooth down with the sandpaper. But I think the worst is over now and I can get the vacuum out before SWMBO gets home and sees the mess .
Coming up next: Fixing the stem, keel and sternpost into place, then make a start on the veneer.

Thank you guys.
Do you know, I find it's amazing that when the sanding is finished, and the pictures taken, looking at them on the big screen shows just how much more smoothing and filling there is too do. I just wish my eyes were as good as my camera lens, it would save me no end of work. Still, I suppose that if the pics were not taken, lots of little areas of work would get overlooked.
Anyway, I've taken on board another of Jase's suggestions and ordered a pack of 'MICRO MESH' which will enable me to get a super smooth and polished finish on the 2nd planking before any varnish is applied.
I'm also going to skip a few stages of construction now. The instructions say to apply the 2nd planking to the hull and add the 'rubbing fenders' before moving on to work on the deck area but I'm going to reverse the order of things here so as not to accidentally damage the finished hull.
So, that's where I'm at for now: the keel has been attached and here are a couple of pics of that stage.

not as smooth as I would like it. Every time I think I've finished, I spot another little bit to smooth. Got to go carefully now otherwise I'll end up with sanding depressions which need filling to regain the smooth line.
I'm looking forward to getting the 2nd planking on though - Jase's build is my bench-mark and if I end up with a finish half as good I'll be well satisfied.

For my part, my other half got this for me as a Christmas pressy because she loved the model Jase built on the forum. So I feel somewhat obliged to be working on the dhow, not to mention the fact that I gave in to the temptation as well - I would have liked to have finished my Victory before moving to another build - but what the hell! I'm enjoying this little build.

Looks Great Do your second layer of planking in the same approach and you can't go wrong.
Just a note from memory and looking at your last pics you will need to add a small piece of planking strip at the bow post as it rises a couple of mm higher than the last strip. its neglected in the instructions and a pig of a job to rectify later on if you miss it, as I did.

Thanks for those words of encouragement Jase.
My 'Micro mesh' turned up in the post today - I received 6 sheets ranging from 1500 to 12000, so should be able to get a really good finish on the veneer before varnishing. Thanks for that tip.

Had to make an adjustment to the build last night; I hope it doesn't make too much difference to the outcome, but I've had to raise the level of planking at the prow by 1/2 of a plank.
The reason being that while re-reading the instructions in preparation for applying the veneer to the inside of the hull, I noticed that the the picture showed the planking extending up as far as the decorative shape on the top of the stem - I had missed this when planking the hull, although something didn't look quite as it should be at he time.
I've now corrected this and I've checked through further stages of the build, and the extra height shouldn't interfere with any of the deck detail which will be added later, though it may increase the angle of the davits and bowsprit slightly as they appear to rest on the top of the planking.

Thats a nice solution, looks good. you are right about it having an effect on the deck fittings but it is minor and won't cause you any problems.

Welcome back to this build diary, and thank you to everyone who have given me positive feedback on the build so far.
Right then, as it stands at the moment, I'm now ready to start applying the 0.6 x 5mm strips of veneer to the outside of the hull which should have been applied several stages back, but decided to omit this until the decking was complete.
I've cut off the exposed parts of the frames at deck level and applied the 0.6 x 5mm basswood strips to the inside of the hull using contact adhesive, followed by shaping the bulwarks at the prow and stern giving them a gentle curve..
The next step was to line the small rectangular hole in the deck with some offcuts of the same basswood strips that were used for the bulwark lining and then trimming them flush with the deck.
Using some 1 x 4mm basswood strips, the decks could now be planked, starting with the small area at the bow, followed by the main deck, stern bulkhead and stern area.
After planking was finished, the edges where the decks meet the bulwarks were lined with sapelly 1.5 x 1.5mm batten and across the stern bulkhead. A piece of 1 x 5mm sapelly batten was used to line the step on the bow section, and 1.5 x 3mm sapelly batten used to make up the stanchions which line the bulwarks.
I skipped another step here and added the stanchion support rail to each side with 1.5 x1.5mm sapelly batten.
One omission - gratefully pointed out by Jase - was that the instructions make no mention of covering the section of keel at the prow where it is exposed above the deck, so used an off-cut of 0.6 x 5mm sapelly to remedy this.
One problem I have at the moment is finding a solution to marking up the deck to simulate the planking and nail heads , so I'm going to come back to that later, but first, it's on with the 2nd planking using the basswood and sapelly 0.6 x 5mm strips.
