Hello all I'm currently on issue 35, second layer of planking. I'll soon need to paint large sections of the hull. I know I could buy the SOTS paint set but does anyone know what colours I could use which I could buy from a local model/hobby shop? It's the maroon strip and white for the hull. The black should be easy but not sure if it's best Matt or satin? Any tips or ideas would be appreciated. Many thanks Paul Building - Sovereign Of The Seas

Humbrol RC418 is what I used for the ships boat interior and hull stripe. Its a railway colour that has a satin finish.
The white for the hull is meant to be an off-white rather than pure white.
I used Painters Touch 'Heirloom White' made by Rust-oleum which is a quick drying satin finish 400ml aerosol that can be used on wood in conjunction with a primer which they also sell.

That's great thank you I used the rc418 for launch interior after you recommendation so still got some of that left. Looks like you used a satin black on your build? Thanks Paul Building - Sovereign Of The Seas

The black is admiralty paints dull black, which can be found via Cornwall Model Boats

1: Is it wise to use light basswood veneer on the hull to replace the white paint?  2: What is the modeller's rule of thumb when choosing wood instead of paint? Basswood is often used as a single plank on hulls, its soft and flexible which makes it easy to apply by comparison of a hardwood. Basswood finishes well but surface 'fur' requires good sealing.
Wood applications:
Planking and decks: Apple, basswood, boxwood, cherry, elm, gum, holly, maple and pear.
Frames: Apple, ash, basswood, birch, boxwood, cherry, degame, elm, holly, maple and pear.
Bent frames: Apple, ash, basswood, boxwood, elm and holly.
Masts and yards: Birch, box, degame, pear, pine, spruce and teak.
Deck equipment: Apple, basswood, boxwood, cherry, holly, maple and pear.
Blocks and deadeyes: Apple, beech, box, cocobolo, holly, lignum vitae, and pear.
Deck houses: Apple, basswood, birch, boxwood, cherry, gum, maple, mahogany, pear, and walnut.
Treenails: Apple, bamboo, birch, boxwood, cherry, holly, maple, and pear.
Carving: Apple, box, cherry, holly, degame and pear.
Turning: Apple, box, cherry, holly, pear, maple and satinwood.
