Not having seen the instructions or content of the Surprise kit, I am unable to comment, but I will try and ascertain why there are no instructions for placement.

They are the ports and hinges but I never used them. I elected to make my own so they could open and close and ran with the planking HMS Surprise HMS Snake HMS Bounty HMS Royal Caroline HMS Victory rebuild HMS Supply

After looking at my instructions the gun port lids arnt fitted until down load 28, which is the last part hope this helps. Peter Builds in progress: HMS Victory.HMS Surprise. Completed builds: Revell London Bus 1/24. Builds to do:Sovereign of the seas, Hms Albion.

Yeah, the problem with the ones that come with the kit is that they clear coat the brass. That's great if you want them shiny which I didn't. I knew that however, so I sanded both sides before I cut them off the runners then I left them in the blackener long enough to eat off the clear coat on the edges. It was still a pain in the butt.
I used mine but never as real hinges. I really didn't care if they opened or closed. My hatches are just static glued on with CA glue in the open position with wire ropes. The hinges are nailed and glued on just for the aesthetics. They are extremely strong. The hinges look fine. They work as good as anything IMO.
