UPDATE #15
Welcome back and thanks for the nice comments. The stern embellishments have now been fitted. This was the first time that any paint has been applied the the model, the inside edges of the decorative mouldings needed to be painted gold together with the horizontal strips on the side walls mounted above. I used 'Tamiya acrylic X-12, Gold leaf' (which was used on the stern decorations of HMS Victory with great success). One thing that I found was that owing to the 'rake' of the stern decorative embellishment, when I dry-fitted it, it was lower than the embellishments on the port and starboard sides. This was remedied by gluing another piece of 1.5 x 3mm walnut on top of the stern gunwale thus making it level all round. Another thing I've noticed at this point is that I made a slight error when constructing the hull, the port side being slightly curved compared to the starboard and although it looks glaringly obvious to me now the embellishments are in place, there's nothing I can do about now and I don't think it will show up too much once the model is completed and is only visible when looking down the length of the model. Before fitting the canopy pillars, I jumped ahead 2 stages and built and glued in place the mizzen mast collar, the mizzen bracket and the lateral strengtheners in place on the stern deck. The collar was a tad fiddly to shape being too big to fit into my hand vice and too small to fit on the table vice so it was sore thumbs time for that part The canopy pillars were then glued in place, the forward pair being pre-drilled with a 0.75mm pilot hole to accept the nails without splitting the narrow timbers where they had to be mounted. The tops of the pillars were also drilled with a pilot hole of the same diameter so there would be no danger of them splitting when the cross beams were added (these were also drilled to accept the brass pins). That's it for now, thanks for looking in and as usual, comments welcome. Next time - making the rails, ladders and hatches. Happy building David

UPDATE #16
Welcome back and thanks for those positive comments. I've now completed the stern and bow rails, the three sets of steps, the large forward hatch cover, the bow pillars and beam and the framework for the trapezoid hatch covers. No problems with this stage but there has been a lot measuring involved with these details and on two occasions, I found I had to remake parts because I had used the Sapelly instead of the Walnut wood, so I'm crossing my fingers that I've got enough wood strips left to finish her: if not it'll be a visit to CMB again. The trouble is I always see something else that would be useful and end up spending more than necessary! Next time I'll be finishing the remaining hatch covers and fitting all the 'bits and bobs' that are stored on the deck. Happy building and comments welcome Daviddaffy09 attached the following image(s):

Hi Ian and thanks. The 'clean' I put down to the use of 'Micro Mesh'. I've just used ordinary sandpaper of various grades up to now, but this Micro mesh really changes the game for me. Bought a pack of 6 from Ebay - the grades range from 1500 up to 12000 and the difference really shows, the finer grades bringing up a lovely sheen on the wood. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting a better finish to their work before applying oil, paint or varnish. Happy building and thanks for looking in David

Hi Derek Only one more month then . You must have a lot of patience not to have given in to the temptation to start. I think that should I decide to try another build after this one, I'll go down the monthly option route myself. The DeAg Model Space shop says that we get what they call 'extended' building instructions with this option which, if that's what I think it is, would be a better option than just relying on the instruction book that AL supply with their kits that can leave one struggling somewhat in places. Thanks for looking in and happy building David

Hi Jase Why not another . It's a beautiful little model and you've already overcome the challenges that this one threw up first time around. Your father must have been really pleased with with his Christmas pressy. It would make a lovely addition to any display cabinet. Thanks for looking in and happy building David

Hi Hans, Thanks for looking in and glad you're liking the build so far - it's been a lot of fun. It's a shame I can't seem to get my camera to focus properly on the mid-distance shots, hence the 'fuzziness'. Hope it hasn't spoiled the enjoyment of looking in. Happy building David

Hi Karl, Thank you, that's a real compliment coming from a builder of your skill and experience. As you know, apart from the DeAg HMS Victory part-work which is still on the go, this is the first 'out-of-the-box' build I've attempted and I really appreciate the comments and support from all the members on this forum. This really is a fun experience for me. Thanks for looking in and happy building.(really loving your work on the 'Constitution' by the way) David

UPDATE #17
Hi everyone, just a quickie to let you know I'll have another build update in a few days. I had decided that my building workspace had become far too cluttered and it had become difficult to work efficiently, so I got myself the 'OcCre Portable Workshop Cabinet' from CMB and after taking delivery today, I've been busying myself building the thing up. Have to say I'm quite impressed with it, the quality in my opinion is really good and with lots of compartmentalized drawers, I'll be able to lay my fingers on all my 'bits and bobs' without having to spend 5 or 10 minutes hunting for them. There's a nice little tool rail for organizing my regularly used tools and all my brushes and timber are all nicely to hand in the vertical side compartments. So now it's back to work on the dhow, should have another update in a couple of days. Thanks to everyone for looking in and for the positive comments left. Happy building David daffy09 attached the following image(s):
