Hi all
Sorry to hijack your part of the forum I am building rb7/and the hummer but I have to say the ship buildings look a lot more hands on and involved .The good wife would like to buy me a out the box model ship . Am I going to end up with 300 pounds of fire wood or should go for a model I don't like that is cheap just to get the taste .I would love to subscribe to a build but she does not love me that much . I am loving the royal Caroline yacht (wife's name ,give a little back) is this to much for first time p.s I am practical not clever
Regards chris

Hi Chris,BigGrin

Out of the box?

I would as only a year and a bit boat model builder(seriously that is) go on recommendations as to which kit is best.
You need a kit with good materials, instructions etc.

The other thing that I think should aid your choice of kit is this:

Any old kit for the hell of it and cheap?

If it goes wrong, you`ll give up on it,Crying

Something that you have an interest in, say "Titanic","Mayflower",etc

Then you will want to overcome any issues that you may encounter and there are always people on this forum that are more than willing to help people with their builds whatever the kit is.

There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum, tap into it and go with the flow, on what ever choice of kit you choose.

Happy building,BigGrin

BigGrin Hi Chris
Its a good question to ask and one that has pitfalls in all of the answers.

Buying a cheap kit that has little interest to you will soon end up forgotten in the corner as would the Royal Caroline as its not a beginers model and would probably end up the same as the cheapo kit.

So what you need is a kit/partwork that takes your fancy and is not going to cost the earth but still allow you to cut your teeth and get the confidence you need for further endeavours.

One to look at maybe the San Francisco or the Arab dhow both have several diarys on the forum to help you and of course the members to ask if you have any query's or problems.

Hope this is of help

Hi Chris, I would have to agree wholeheartedly with Andy by going for the San Fran or the Dow.... personally I would go for the San Fran but then again I maybe biased as I have two of them..... It is a beautiful kit and the instructions are very well presented..... Cool Cool .. Taking a look at some of the diaries I think will prove it to you.... good luck in whatever kit you choose..... Cool Cool

Regards

Alan

BigGrin Hi Cris
Some of the below you may already have
A modellers knife, razor saw, mitre block[if needed], small files, pin pusher , pins, ruler, set square, pegs or clamps and a good glue , I would suggest Aliphatic.
All are available here if you do not have a local model shop

http://www.cornwallmodel....uk/acatalog/tools.html

Hope this helps
