Alan,
looking at your pics, would it be possible to to cut channels out of the balsa for the scuttle lights?
You could leave the balsa ,add the plank, cut your scuttles and then cut channels throughout the balsa for your wiring. You would have to do the lighting before further planking, but sure it would work.

Hi Alan. Looking at Picture 61 the planked one. could you put a balsa insert behind the one aready on the stern of the boat, down to the first rudder notch. also would need to cut groove for the rudder to go into balsa infill. this might help with the stern shapping. hope this may be of help. ian Current builds.Hachettes build the bismark,HMS Victory, HMS Hood.

Jase Hi Jase, thanks for looking in and I appreciate your comments and suggestions.... The balsa blocks I applied will have to be removed and replaced with larger ones, this will be so I can get the profile of the stern sorted out which to be honest is my biggest concern right now.... Once I'm happy with the new blocks then your suggestion of cutting channels into the balsa will work and it's my intention to lay fibre optics into those channels to light each of the scuttles (didn't know that was what they were called).... Will have to fully plank both layers first so that I can lay the ply etch in place to mark out where to drill the holes and cut the channels. This will be possible as the decks are simply pinned in place as a temporary measure....  .. So its back to the SOTS for now while waiting for supplies to arrive from CMB.... Thanks again, Alan

Hi Ian, pleased you enjoyed the links..... I cannot agree more,the fineartmodels of the Titanic is some 18ft long, made mostly from brass sheeting and is simply stunning...... A very big project Alan and you are making good progress.If I was to offer any advice,it would simply be take nothing for granted with Mantua kits,check everything,but I think you have already worked that one out  Kind Regards Nigel

Think also I have been spoiled when I look at the instructions provided with SOTS compared to Mantua kits.... well, there isn't any comparison, not even close..... I have looked at your stern Alan,on more than one occasion,but at first wasn't sure what you meant,I now get it.The originals stern has three 'facets' to it,where as the kit is basically a chunk of balsa'here you go,its up to you'.Unfortunately to try and explain how to tackle this is a bit beyond the realms of the keyboard.If you make some card templates one at the stern centre profile and then a few with the height of these chine lines on at various positions along the hulls length for the area in question is all I can really say,the rest is very much hands on,This detail is one of those things that will take time,but I agree with you,it wants to be right,the stern is a big part of Titanic's character.I would think it safe to say that the area inbetween these chine lines is straight when viewed in section vertically.There are other options than carving incorpating formers and a thin ply skin but it would take me as long to try and explain it as it would you to carve the balsa  Kind Regards Nigel

Build comes in 5 separate kits, kit 1 shows one profile for the stern, kit 2 shows something completely different..... Card templates have already been started and have made the one for the centre stern already..... You have just confirmed I am on the right track, next step is to put it into practice...... Yes Alan,you sound like you have it in hand I will keep dropping in and see how you get on,but I think you have sussed it for yourself.It really is a case of just taking small amounts off until you get down to where you want.A large sharp scalpel may be preferable to sanding as you can get those crisp corners.The only thing that I would of maybe done differently is to use lime instead of balsa,principally so the facets could be worked with a cabinet scraper.Good luck mate!!
