Hello all, The gangway derricks have been made and rigged, a start has been made on the gangways. An ensign staff has been made and fitted at the stern. Flag halyards have been made and flags fitted, they are 48 star ones, I am not 100% sure they are correct, but they are the only non 50 star ones I could find. A steam valve and control stand has been made and fitted, the steam pipework is under construction. The next job will be a simulation of the valve gear, and that should complete the engine room. Hello Jase,
The model is designed for RC, the drawings show the motor location, and the cranks shafting etc for RC. A full description of the steering gear is also shown. I would imagine a fairly hefty battery could be fitted in the boiler room along with a battery for internal lighting. I think the antenna could be hidden inside one of the funnels, or to replace some of the bracing wires.

Hello all, Most of the steam piping has been made and fitted, plastruct tubing was used, it was bent using the convected heat from a soldering iron. I imagine a hair dryer would probably work as well. I need to get some 1mm wire or similar to make the valve gear driving mechanism, plus some other odds and sods. Both gangways have been made, and placed in position to show where they go, and for photography, they will need to be removed before the first deck is permanently fitted. A viewing widow is being made to replace the aft engine room bulkhead, and to keep dust out. A start has been made on first deck support pillars. More next week, Regards, Tony. Hello all, The first deck has been glued to the hull, and the upper parts of the first deck stairs have been fitted. A window to the aft end of the engine room has been made. I am awaiting the arrival of some bits and pieces, to simulate valve gear. First deck support pillars are being made, and will be fitted on completion and painting. More next week, Regards, Tony. Hello all, The first deck support pillars have been fitted and painted. One tip for anybody doing this build, make sure the 1 x 4mm planks slide through the slots freely. The back of the planks should be painted before fitting, and allow for any slight misalignment. The chain is 2mm blackened brass also used on the gangways. The mesh has been painted and fitted to the third deck openings. The LP steam exhaust pipework has been made and fitted. On earlier steam boats the engines exhausted directly to atmosphere, through two smaller funnels aft. This was feasible with the comparatively low working pressure of the boilers. The boilers would be blown down regularly to remove mud and sludge from the river water. I will not be ordering the valve gear bits and pieces just yet, I have plenty of other stuff to be getting on with. More next week, Regards, Tony. Tony C attached the following image(s):

Hello all, The stbd side first deck support pillars have been made painted and fitted. The 1 x 4mm planks are fitted and painted. Stanchions and railings have been fitted to the stbd side of the paddle wheel. Guard rails have been made and fitted round the top of the stairway to the first deck. I have posted a photo of the six stages of making a cabin door, I have nine to make for this deck and 14 for the second deck, plus two shutters for each door. I should have mentioned this before, when cutting out the openings for the cabin doors, the dimensions should be increased by 2mm each way to allow for the 1x4mm lining, or the door outside edges will be too thin. The cabin doors and shutters will complete the first deck, the ship side rails will be installed when the second deck is secured in place. More next week, Regards, Tony. Hello all, Over the last week I have made and fitted 8 doors and 4 sets of shutters. It doesn't sound like much, but they are time consuming and fiddly. I have tried a new way of making the louvre slats. I made a cutting jig to cut the 0.5x4mm mahogany into 5mm lengths, and the glued them to a 0.5x4mm lime wood strip in suitable lengths for the shutters. It seems to work as only minimal sanding is needed. I am posting another photo of door manufacture. I clamp the straight edge along the line of the openings, then put it in the vice with the straight edge resting on top of the jaws, then close the jaws, remove the clamps and straight edge; then file the wood level with the vice jaws. Next week I hope to make the last door for this deck, and the five sets of shutters. Regards, Tony. Tony C attached the following image(s):
