Ok then, Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, a brilliant Confederate Cavalry commander who helped Gen R E Lee to some of his greatest victories. Unfortunately, just like G A Custer, he was also prone to swanning off on his own against orders and caused some of Lee's worst defeats as well!
Ironically he died of pneumonia as a complication of having his arm amputated after getting shot by his own sentries returning from a night patrol!
Lee later admitted that if Jackson had been alive for Gettysburg, he wouldn't have lost the battle.

The standard .303 round did evolve from basically a gunpowder charge to the smokeless and more powerful cordite during the Metford-Enfield period and come to think about it, it was the change to cordite that brought about the change too!
So you are at least half right, but the change I'm looking for was to a part of the rifle itself. You're nearly there, have another go!

That's why the Lee Metford became the Lee Enfield! The Lee part is the 'receiver' section, ie the assembly that holds the bolt, magazine and trigger assemblies, and Metford refers to the barrel with the Metford style of rifleing grooves which is screwed into the receiver. When the change from black powder to cordite came in, the shallower Metford grooves became fouled up with burnt cordite residue after only a few hundred rounds causing cartridge and bullet jams so a new barrel with a deeper style of groove the 'Enfield' design was fitted to the existing receiver becoming the greatest bolt action battle rifle in history! the Lee Enfield.

Seems this has been a bit of a dead end.

So as my kitchen renovation has stalled, due to a unit not fitting where it`s required , I`ve been browsing the site looking for a change of direction to give my head a chance to recover.
