tiandrew wrote:Excellent job mate but how did you get the original rivet effect on the tiles? I think it looked far more effective (but that's my opinion)but still a stunning job, I just hope that mine turns out as good. Tiandrew, The first copper hull I did I was not happy with so I re-did it all again, I think it just looked slightly out of scale - if you want to have a go though I have a tutorial here - http://forum.model-space...aspx?g=posts&t=7800
Thanks for your comments and for looking in Cheers Steve

Taz wrote:Hi Steve Looking really great, all the hard work is paying off . Regards Taz Thankyou Taz Today I completed the fore, main and mizzen stays and preventers, along with some of the topmast stays as well. Just some random pics of todays completed work, some are a bit dark - not trying to hide mistakes (honest) just had the lamp pointing the wrong way. Really enjoying this bit - it gives a meaning to all those little blocks I have been tying on months back in the build! Cheers Steve stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Peter Thankyou Peter, I have really enjoyed this part of the rigging although I do realise that this is the easy stuff - Im not putting sails on though so that cuts out a lot of work . With the clarity of the De Ag instructions you can't go wrong so don't worry. Steve

Did a little more on the Vic recently, I thought the ratlines were next up but not quite it seems. Firstly I have prepared all the remaining gunport covers - 62 of them as the top row was done way back before the shrouds went on. A little tip here for anyone coming up to this part, the instructions say to cut the gunport hinges down to fit before glueing them on, I left them on full length - doing this give you something to hold while painting both sides and they can be trimmed off and filed down later I have fitted the 4 bow port covers as these are meant to be fitted closed. All wriggles are on and the lamps are made up. I only fitted the main mast lamp though as the 3 stern ones will only end up getting knocked off if I fit them now. Some more rigging done also, these were the 9 top ropes (3 for each mast) I think these were to raise and lower the mast sections. Not easy to see but they are the natural coloured thread on the mast pics below. Also fitted the top row stern dummy cannons (3 each side) I will get the the port lids fitted next - more soon! Thankyou Del, Yes, It was a bit repetitive, that is the only trouble with ships like this, there are so many jobs that you have to repeat, sometimes 100+ times! - That's why we love this hobby though. Does anyone have any ideas of how best to deal with the rope left on deck after tying them off, should they just be cut short or coiled or do they go to the belaying pins? Steve

Hi Stevie! Looking absolutely great! Well done indeed! With regards to the ropes, I followed the advice in the Keith Julier "Period Ship Handbook" when I built my model of the Grimsby, excuse the photo quality, this was before the advent of digital cameras! What I did was to actually thread the rigging rope down through the hole that the belaying pin sits in and used the pin shaft to secure it in place. The rope was then cut off short underneath the pin rack and the coil of rope hanging off the pin is a completely separate item. Keith's jig is simply a block of wood (mine was about 1/2" square strip) with a pair of removable dowels at right angles to each other (I used cocktail sticks!) One is in the top face of the block and the other is in the vertical side as far down as you want the coil to hang. Just wrap the rigging thread around the two dowels until you end up with a coil of rope with a 90 degree angle at the top. Apply PVA to stiffen it up and when dry remove the dowels and lift the coil away, trim the ends and place over the belaying pin to give the appearence of the rigging line being coiled in place! Keep up that great work M8!
