Sincerest apologies to all! I've been laid up in bed since Sunday, last October's flu jab doesn't seem to have been so effective this time!Crying (Actually it was more like sinusitis than flu so can't really blame the jab!)

The answer to the question was:

The machine gun was the Vickers and the battlefield was Vimy (Ridge) and the means by which they both crossed the Atlantic was in the Vickers Vimy bomber as used by Alcock and Brown in their first ever powered flight across the Atlantic!

Many thanks to Andy for stepping in!

Now where's me Beechams?

What was the 'Mad Minute' used by British soldiers and made the Germans think they were being shot at by machine guns.

Ok then, Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, a brilliant Confederate Cavalry commander who helped Gen R E Lee to some of his greatest victories. Unfortunately, just like G A Custer, he was also prone to swanning off on his own against orders and caused some of Lee's worst defeats as well!
Ironically he died of pneumonia as a complication of having his arm amputated after getting shot by his own sentries returning from a night patrol!
Lee later admitted that if Jackson had been alive for Gettysburg, he wouldn't have lost the battle.

Thanks Benny Here's another WW1 based question:

What is the main difference between a Lee Metford and a Lee Enfield?

Best of Luck

A good try there Jase!
The standard .303 round did evolve from basically a gunpowder charge to the smokeless and more powerful cordite during the Metford-Enfield period and come to think about it, it was the change to cordite that brought about the change too!
So you are at least half right, but the change I'm looking for was to a part of the rifle itself. You're nearly there, have another go! Blink

does this fuller answer cover it for you matey?

smokeless powder in the 303 cartage that became viable due to a change in rifling pattern from shallow round to a deeper square cut. This was on of several improvements that made this the fasts firing gun of the era.

That'll do nicely!BigGrin

That's why the Lee Metford became the Lee Enfield! The Lee part is the 'receiver' section, ie the assembly that holds the bolt, magazine and trigger assemblies, and Metford refers to the barrel with the Metford style of rifleing grooves which is screwed into the receiver. When the change from black powder to cordite came in, the shallower Metford grooves became fouled up with burnt cordite residue after only a few hundred rounds causing cartridge and bullet jams so a new barrel with a deeper style of groove the 'Enfield' design was fitted to the existing receiver becoming the greatest bolt action battle rifle in history! Cool the Lee Enfield.

Great one Jase, over to you then! Cool

Well done Benny It was the Vulcan that was due to be retired. The Falklands war was the only aggressive missions the aircraft ever flew.

Hi All, BigGrin BigGrin

Seems this has been a bit of a dead end. Confused

So as my kitchen renovation has stalled, due to a unit not fitting where it`s required Cursing Cursing Cursing , I`ve been browsing the site looking for a change of direction to give my head a chance to recover.Laugh

To that end, my answer is "Battle of the Bulge".

If that`s wrong, then I`ll reboot the quiz with the following:

On the 19th Dec 1944, Montgomery was tasked with defending three bridges on a river.

Please, name the river.
name the places where the three bridges were located.

and as a final part, to get you searching,

Which armoured brigade had to reclaim their tanks from being re-equipped to take part in the defense of the bridges.

Happy hunting

Regards

Hi all BigGrin

Ok,no takers for that one,Confused.

So, the bridges were:

Givet, Dinant and Namur

and the 29th Armoured Brigade had to reclaim their tanks.

Try this one, BigGrin

A battle to control a city was fought between the German forces and Russian forces. The battle began in August 1942 and in the end the German 6th army were cut off.

Name the city where the battle was fought
and
Give the name the city is now known by.
