Having had the first 3 issues now arrive I'm chomping at the bit to get on and start to build! I'm just trying to buy-up the bits I'll need to start with but I've gotten a bit stuck... Tools I'm mostly OK for but understanding the various methods of preparing and painting or staining wood has always been one of my achilles heels - there's just so many ways of doing it and so many opinions as to what's best. On larger things I've made I used to prefer acrylic varnish until I found it stays tacky indefinitely, so I started using Danish Oil (with Beeswax over sometimes) but I'm not sure that this will suit the SOTS. What do people use to seal/prime the wood on the SOTS before painting? As I understand it a water-based primer/sealer would raise the grain, an oil-based would be best penetrating for bare-wood and a shellac one would be a good sealer but not great primer (these are Zinsser products I read up on for signmaking once upon a time). All three should take acrylic paint OK. Also, I was thinking about buying a selection of the Caldercraft Admiralty stains and the varnishes they offer at Cornwall Model Boats - it's not cheap but I was wondering about testing out each to see what they're like? Is this a prudent way to go or is there a better way that works out more cost effective than buying these small pots? Hi I generally use a celulose based sanding sealer to seal and fill the pores on wood then a primer used before being painted but any bare wood is better just varnished. The newer water based varnishes tend not to raise the grain too much . Jotika are the makers of the Admiralty stains, paint and varnishes that are available at CMB link below http://www.jotika-ltd.co...s/1024768/PSA_Front.htm
Also you may have missed the link to the paint set available for the SotS from the shop that has all the relevant colours needed and has been put together using Admiralty paints This Sovereign of the Seas Paint Set comprises 18 X 18ml waterbased paints. 3 x Matt White 2 x Dull Black 1 x xMatt Black 2 x Gold / Brass 1 x Light Ivory 1 x Ivory Green 1 x Red Ochre 1 x French Blue 2 x Burgundy 1 x Yellow Ochre 1 x Wood (Walnut) Brown 1 x Antique Bronze 1 x Ensign Red link here http://shop.deagostini.c...the-seas-paint-set.html
Hope this helps regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Cheers Andy, so you're suggesting varnish the bare wood to prime it then apply the paint rather than using sanding sealer? I did see the SOTS paint set but thankyou for the link - it's on the list of "to buy's" but I wanted to narrow down the other items first and decide on a set of paints to use as washes before I put an order in! hi Not at all if you read my post I say with wood that is not being painted several coats of varnish will do fine but that any area to be painted use a sanding sealer then primer if needed before painting regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Andy, assuming it's acrylic paint you put over the cellulose sealer, have you found this OK over time? The cellulose and acrylic are compatible and haven't caused problems with one another? Subscribed to: DeAgostini Artesania Sovereign of the Seas, Hachette Amati Black Pearl!

Hi You are quite correct in saying there can sometimes be a reaction between different paints this is usally when an oil based paint has not been given time to cure properly so when the acrylic is applied over it you get bubbles forming in the paint as the volatiles keep trying to burn off from inside causing this problem. The sanding sealer should be sanded back so you get a smooth surface then apply the paint. regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

hi matt, I have been using acrylic over shellac for over 20 years, and also enamel over shellac without problem. Finishing comes later on, so initial thoughts should be of getting on with the build, thoughts should be of getting on with the build than of the end result, finishing which can be considered at the relevant points,, which can be gleamed from what has already been posted within topics and members build diaries. If you intend to use Admiralty products and unsure about coverage/use, then speak with Jotika (the manufacturer),who are best placed to provide specific information on their products, as they are also a kit manufacturer and their products are specifically designed for period model ships. let us know how you got on. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Cheers Andy! And thanks Karl - I agree, I realise I've gotten a little carried away with how I might finish parts in respect of the SOTS but having signed up to two builds and with the Pearl being a diorama I expect to be finishing parts on it sooner rather than later (such as the ribs that'll be on show and adding my own decking in place of the paper overlay). Having now got an idea I can start thinking about how I want to decorate these parts and buy the paints and etc gradually over the next month or two :-) Subscribed to: DeAgostini Artesania Sovereign of the Seas, Hachette Amati Black Pearl!
