Plymouth57 wrote:Nice looking 'Tops' Alan! That Burgundy will really set them off too! Do I detect the Unimat warming up for the mast! Lovely work! Robin Thanks Robin, the Unimat lathe is all set up and ready to go so should make the job of tapering the mast sections a lot easier, just have to be careful I don't go overboard and take off too much.... At least I have plenty of Walnut dowel should I make a mess of any of the sections..... Have now just ordered the Occre Portable Work Station, think this will come in very handy especially for when I get to the rigging stage..... Looked at the diary of Andy (AR Purchase) and that convinced me it would be a very handy accessory to have for this hobby.... So thanks has to go to Andy for sharing this one with us..... Thanks again Alan

For me, I just do not fancy staining or painting the masts which is why I'm changing it all for walnut.... Best Regards Alan

Hi all, short update on progress.. Have now finished issue 78 with the completion of the first fighting top for the main mast... Have also tapered and stained with satin walnut varnish the lower main mast and the main topmast.... Tapering of the masts was made easier with the use of the unimat lathe, this is turning out to be an invaluable tool... Am also very pleased with how the walnut stain took to the walnut dowel. As I have all the dimensions for the main mast tomorrow am going to continue cutting, shaping and staining the remaining sections, including all the yards.... Regards delboy271155 (Derek) Thanks Derek, the unimat classic was given to me as a xmas present and now I wouldn't be without it... Takes a little getting used to and has masses of uses. I'm in the process of sourcing additional motors, accessories and power supplies allowing me to have more than one machine set up on an extra long bed such as the lathe, sander, drill and milling machine, these are the machines I probably use the most... To some it may be a little expensive but you get what you pay for.... Regards Alan

Hi all, decided to take a couple of evenings off from working on the SOTS and the Titanic.... I was finding the more work I did on the SOTS the more unstable the build was becoming. Sitting on a pillow was for me ideal whilst working on the hull but not ideal when it came to attaching the various fittings and décor.... Spent the last couple of evenings putting together my latest acquisition, the Ocre work station, so now the SOTS sits safely in its cradle.... I think the work station is an excellent piece of kit with a great deal of versatility which should serve me well in the future... Didn't do a build diary simply because there is already an excellent diary on putting this together published by Andy (ARPurchase), so thanks Andy for publishing and of course for recommending this item.... Tomorrow, back to ship building by working on issue 79 of the SOTS..... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi all, well the construction part of issue 79 is now complete. This issue required the make up of the middle and top fighting tops. cross trees and mast caps. Once all the parts were cleaned up of the usual black ash the parts were glued in place. When it came to fitting the top rail (ring), I placed a tin of soup on top to weigh it all down until dry, this also ensured that everything was square. Tomorrow will start the staining and painting stage so until then, happy building all.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
