Hi there I'm new to modelling well SOTS is my first model and I do not know which paints to use I looked at the admiralty paint and it doesn't have burgundy or ivory green only olive green and maroon. I can't get the official paint set from the uk store as it doesn't ship to oz. where do I get my materials from? And what are the basic tools I need? If I use a paint brush won't you be able to see the brush strokes how do you get rid of that and how do you hold an object to paint it? Is medium superglue ok? And is is metal primer ok for the whole ship?

Hi DamselBigGrin

Welcome to the forum, not sure what you meant about the glue to hold pieces while painting?

There are a few places in Oz that have the paints but here is one for you -

http://www.miniaturestea...ls.com/category89_1.htm

Paints required are -

Dull Black x 2
Matt (Metal) Black x 1
Matt White x 3
Yellow Ochre x 1
Red Ochre x 1
French Blue x 1
Olive Green x 1
Wood (Walnut) Brown x 1
Gold / Brass x 2
Light Ivory x1
Red Ensign x 1
Maroon x 2
Antique Bronze x 1

You wont see the brush strokes when brush painted most people use brushes and not sprays and the results are very good.

Metal primer is not advised for wood, just metal. The wood generally does not need priming just good preparation but a sealer can be used if you like to stop too much paint being absorbed, I didnt though and it wasnt a problem.

Some basic tool info here for you

You can buy little stands with arms and bulldog clips on the ends for holding small objects, often with a magnifying glass as well. I've seen them in many hobby stores and eBay.

I've found toothpicks very useful for holding objects while painting. Like the cannons. Insert one end of the toothpick into cannon barrel and hold the other end of the toothpick. Very convenient.

HelloBigGrin

The matt black is for any black metal components as a rule. The gun carriage would have had wooden wheels. I would expect the gun carriage to be red ochre. However I am not building the SOTS so you may want to look at other members build diaries to see how others have gone about the build. You probably can find answers to most questions in them.

Hope you enjoy your build.

Hi,
I am in the same boat (ha ha). I am trying to get the right colour scheme, what type to buy, and where. If I get details I'll let you know.

Regards
Ted

Damsel,
New also but have found a supply of British Naval(can't spell admirality to save myself) Paints at this location http://www.floataboat.com.au/.

Use the list of paints listed earlier in this forum and order them. The Company is ordering paints shortly to fill orders.

Hi Shaky

Yes, I told the representative that I put her reply to my email on the forum and that I expected now a number of Australian members would likely order from Float A Boat.BigGrin

They have also ordered the missing four colours for us.Cool
