After many a false start I have been trying to get on with my victory build. Thought all was going well but being a complete idiot and not reading the instructions properly have the following issue.

Page 12 of magazine no 22 states the stern 6th plank should be tapered along its last 130mm by 1.5mm.

Like an idiot I have not tapered and these are fixed in place.

I have progressed no further than plank 6 but the titebond I am using is not going to allow a clean removal without damaging plank 5 layers below.

The question is if I leave this plank as is I.e. Un-tapered am I going to cause myself problems further along in the build.

Hope someone maybe able to advise please.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi Tony,
My best advice is to try and remove the plank if possible. This will allow you to keep to the letter of the instructions as you progress.

However, if you cannot do that then all is not lost. You simply need to compensate on the next few planks. Have a look at maybe an additional .5mm on the next 3 planks for example to correct the error.

Have a look at the instructions and think through what looks the best option, there should not be any major issues.

hi tony,do not panic, titebond I believe is pva, which I sometime use, if you use a 1/2" paintbrush dipped in hot water, and run it along the glue line,it will soften up,and can be easily removed,if you have any more probs just pm me. try to follow the instruction as closely as possible, good luck.

Many thanks for your help.

I guess the answer is to try and remove these 2 planks (1 on each side).

Thought I was doing so well up to this point as well, just goes to show it never pays to get over confident.

Thanks again for your time.

Kind regards

Tony

As you are only up to p6, it would not be the end of the world if you had to remove the lot and start again if you caused any damage.

I agree with Jase though, there is much still to do and it isn't that precise later on. In others words, you will need to adjust as you go so being 1.5mm over size at this point can easily be corrected as you go.

Many thanks for your input.

I think this is a job for the weekend ( works gets in the way all week).

Had a look at the glue and it's an aliphatic based one that sets like concrete so pulling apart is a no go.

I did just look through some of the later magazines and I hope I should be able to lose this 1.5mm over the next several rows of planks.

I guess it's a lesson (but if learnt only time will tell) to read the instruction properly.

Thanks again.

"I guess it's a lesson (but if learnt only time will tell) to read the instruction properly."

I seem to have to learn this every time I touch the boat.

I must say though, a simple wood glue has worked fine especially if you bend the planks into shape well. You may want to reconsider your choice as you may need top remove the odd plank or two later on.

Good luck.

Hi Tony,
Listen, don't beat yourself up over this small mistake. You do know that we men never read instructions! BigGrin You'll find there are more (mistakes) waiting for you. Because you're working with wood it's so easy just to sand or pull apart.
I've had a couple of whoopsies but I found it's half the fun doing something again as it tests your skills, and you'll find that these will improve as you go on.
We're dealing with a model, imagine what the guys who built the original Victory must have gone through with full sized timber. I bet they made their mistakes too. I would have liked to have been there to see it.
Keep going !! There are plenty here that are willing to help.

Cliff

hi tony, aliphatic glue is VERY easy to soften /remove, warm water on a brush and 5min. later it's soft rubber. try and see.

Aliphatic adhesive sands better than other PVA based blues in my experience. As Karl says should not be a problem to remove if you follow his advice.

Just a small word of warning (and I know we are discussing the Victory, so does not apply to this build) but don't try to unbound the glue in this manner on MDF like the Black Pearl, as the water may make the MDF swell and become brittle.

Jase (Karl)

Many thanks again for the advice.

Since my last note I have not had chance to progress any further with the build as work always gets in the way.

Anyhow have a weeks leave this week (the use it or lose it type as my companies leave year starts in April and you can only carry forward 5 days).

I am hoping to devote a bit more time to the build this week and will give your suggestions a try. I have been using "professional original titebond". At first glance it looks bombproof when dry but you have the experience so happy to learn from that.

Just waiting now for some bits and pieces to arrive from model expo. Bought myself what looks like a very good pliers type pin pusher as I just cannot get on with the traditional types. Only downside being my $120 dollar order has cost me a further £28.95 in import and postal clearance duties.

Many thanks again for everyone's advice

Tony
