There is increasing speculation that German car giant Mercedes-Benz may buy out British sports car marque Aston Martin.

Speaking to Autocar magazine, Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche did not rule out the possibility of acquiring the iconic UK manufacturer.

Mercedes already owns a 5% stae in Aston, and has signed a deal which will see its new turbocharged AMG engine V8 powering the next generation Vantage.

The potential benefits for Aston Martin are enormous, and would allow it to put previously mothballed plans into fruition, particularly the Lagonda SUV, which would be based on Mercedes GL underpinnings.

Rolls Royce seem to have done good under BMW. But sadly the Aston buyout it would be the loss of yet another British marque and will be in name only.

I know Aston have had 'other' owners etc in the past, but they've always seemed quintessentially 'British'.

Being owned by a German company won't cut the mustard in the same way.
