I am now starting the lower hull planking and in some strange way I'm looking forward to it. After pinning a plank from 25 to 18 I then tried a plank from 18 to the bow. As per the instructions I found there was a natural gap. The thing I have noticed thought that if this plank is moved up or down slightly this gap can vary. What I would like to know is, is there a recommended width for this gap? 2mm to half a plank width is mentioned in the instructions. My guess it that the object of tapering to the gap is to insure that the top of the plank is level.
