D51 - Parts set 11 - left side running board.

I was looking forward to this part of the build and I was not disappointed. Although the screws were used to position/hold the running boards they were soldered in place and the screws removed.
At present all the screw holes remain. I did intend to use brass rivets in these but I have spotted some 2mm brass rivet bolts that look ideal and have a very much neater head. More details to follow once received.
As usual I will place more details re soldering under 'Modelling Know How'.

Hi Dennis, looking really good.
I am using the Brass Rivet head bolts on my build, I got mine from CMB, but the heads are quite roughly turned, so I've had to polish the heads. Secondly they are almost impossible to screw in (but I suppose as you have soldered, you can drill out and use a nut) I solved my problem by slotting the other end and then screwing them in from the rear.

Hi Andy,

Thank you. Great minds eh? The rivet bolts I have ordered are 12mm long so I intend to screw in by hand. Then using pliers on the protruding end screw them home and simply cut off the excess length. Dremel, clean up and possibly a little solder to hold.
I have already purchased some 1.4mm ones and yes they have a tiny point in the middle of the head. They should be easily removed if it proves to be a problem.

Hi again Dennis,
That should work, but they have quite a sharp edge so any tightening on the threads results in very sore finger tips. I am not painting my build , so I am trying to avoid the black screws against brass were ever possible. I have managed to source some very nice small headed brass crosshead screws from China, but I notice that the supplier will no longer ship to Europe. Fortunately I think I ordered enough.

Thank you. The brass parts are nice and clean and solder easily. The rivet bolts are from Modelling Timbers who are the same company that I bought the bolts off.
They look so much than the rivets.

Hi Andy (Court Orchard),

I wish I had spotted the rivet bolts before. I have already used some 2mm stainless allen bolts even perfecting how to solder stainless to fill in and achieve a rivet shaped head! I can see me removing them and replacing with the brass ones!
Keeping the loco in brass will be excellent.

D51 parts 11 back head

An important part of any model steam locomotive is undoubtably the back head and the detail.
Therefore I have used reference pictures of actual D51 back heads for guidance. I have modified parts such as the top gauge mount assembly to better mirror the actual loco.
I noted that the valve box has additional valves mounted in the lower section. This is also shown in the instruction sheet 84. Therefore I found a source of 1:24 gate valves. I have continued adding extra detail re the copper pipes. Although I have taken some liberties with the actual run of these because of limited space.
As well as printing my own pressure gauge transfers I have also printed transfers of actual water gauges. I will include in the Modelling Know How section a short note on printing transfers that may prove useful for further projects.
Although the brass projection (right side door pivot) is shown as a separate part on page 87 of the instructions, it does in fact arrive as part of the right firebox door. The pivot is an interference fit and should be fine when opening/closing the doors. However I found mine came loose. So I removed the pivot and glued it in place using slow epoxy. I also countersunk the rear of the hole in the right side door where the pivot fits. This allowed the epoxy a better hold. It now works fine.

Fantastic build, Dennis. After having had my first set of parts for a week or so, and taking inspiration from your approach, I finally took the plunge and restocked my soldering supplies today and made a start. Also picked up a miniature (pencil style) burner - fantastic little thing! To my surprise I found myself using that exclusively.

I've a lot of sanding and filing to do tonight and will doubtless have to do a second round of filling later, but I found the soldering almost infinitely more satisfying than Aralditing it all would have been. Thanks for the excellent writeups! ThumpUp

Thank you. I am pleased you have found my build so helpful.
For many years I visited the Wigan Model Railway show which used to be held just before Christmas. At every show you had the experts sitting building models, usually brass. I always passed them by. One year I decided to chat to one about soldering. I learn't so much in those 20 or so minutes. Use of the burner, using tiny pieces of solder wire etc. So it is good that I can now also share that knowledge. The D51 quality is superb and being mostly brass it solders so well. If you have any questions then please just ask.
