Hi all, new to the forum, very inspired by the excellent soldered build by Dennis. I put together my first parts set yesterday after investing in a small butane torch and some restocking of my long-defunct soldering supply drawer.

The torch is wonderful, and comes with a variety of soldering heads to boot. It's like a new world, haha - thanks Dennis for that tip. I almost didn't go for it, thinking an electric iron was plenty, how wrong I would have been.

I'll also be ordering in some of the nice brass hex-head screws other members are using, and probably making other mods as I go along. Sorry about the lack of pics, just kicking this off while I remember, on my tea break. I'll post pics tonight.

Cheers,
Martyn

PS does anyone know who to contact to enquire about upping the frequency of deliveries until caught up? I'm in Australia; can the local proxy people deal with such requests?

Welcome to ModelSpace Martyn Cool

You need to speak with c/s regarding the frequency of your deliveries, though I doubt there will be opportunity to catch up to the UK roll out.

Thanks Tomick. I did manage to get a couple of extra issues ordered, so I should be getting shipments 3, 4 and probably 5 all around the same time. Australia is up to shipment 7, I gather, so I can go to that point.

Wow, where did that last month go? Anyway, belatedly, here are some pics of where I'm at right now, only the first two deliveries so far of course.

I fear my work will be nothing like as tidy as that of Dennis! But so be it - having started down this course I can't really change, not that I would if I could. Soldering the pieces gives them an irresistible sense of heft and solidity. :)

Hi Martyn,

Welcome to the D51 build. You're off to a good start. Taking a break from the Cygnus?

Thanks chaps, and hi Mark! Not exactly - I have been hard at it on the Cygnus for some weeks in fact, and a couple of CG projects for other people too. The stern is nearly at a printable stage, at last. And my eyes have gone square. :)

Thanks for the tip, Andy. Er...tip, or "friendly mod suggestion"? Laugh Either way, let's try it out...OK, I think I mentioned my approach not being to everyone's taste, here's proof. Laugh

'What the hell is he doing to that poor model?' will be the obvious question. As far as these pics are concerned, the answers are 'stripping the black paint off the chassis because it doesn't feel "authentic" enough somehow' and 'something something mutter experimental something'. Laugh

I've got a bit further than this since, so if we get any sunshine tomorrow (doubtful) I'll post some pics that will make it clearer whether there's method in my madness, or just madness. Huh

Cheers,
Martyn
