I have just perchased firts edition of sos and waiting for my first subscription of 2,3,4 and 5. not sure what paint to ues,oil or water base, can anyone help me to decide?Ive noticed that on the UK web site that they are offering a full set of paint for around 35 ponds, which look like they are a water base.appreciate any advise.

Hi Welcome to the forum, The set of paints for the SOTS are water based acrylics and are recommended for the job. They are fast drying and easy clean up. There are also some water based woodstains and varnishes in the same range. Oils will give a very nice finish but do take a very long time to dry properly. Good luck with your build  Steve

Hi Bligh Welcome aboard the forum, The water based paints are as good or better than the older enamels and are formulated to have a high pigment content and dry quickly. The paint set available for the Sots is based on paint chips from the period and will give a good colour match also the set should be available to buy later in the year. Another place for paint is the 'Games Workshop' [ not sue if you have them down under] where they do war gaming figurines they do some good paints there but they have some strange names and will be a case of a lot of testing for colours. As for wood stains its more cost effective to buy from your local hardware/DIY store but as with all stains do a test piece 1st just to check the colour match regards Andy  Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

HI arpurchase, I have used Games Workshop/ citadel paints for at last 15 years with great success, with its range of base colours, tones and washes great effects are possible so long as you don't overdo it. I found dry brushing effective for bringing raised details and washes for fine surface areas to create depth. Highlighting is another technique worth learning.
I have also used Feast Watson stains purchased from Bunnings. My only caution is the fullness of the colour because at the small scale may appear too rich.. There is a good range of dark, mid tone and yellows and I mostly prefer "old baltic.

Thanks for the help guys, I am also considering using an air brush but the cost of a good one is quite high.

Hi Bligh. Re paints (Admiralty Paints) colours for SOTS. Doesn't include stains. You get those wherever if you decide to stain and varnish. Look on my thread Page 4, Post 71 and you'll see supplier (Float A Boat) and how to contact along with the list of colours you'll need. Hope that is of some help to you.
