I am building the Caldercraft Victory and have a problem in drilling the small 0.5mm holes required (looks like hundreds of holes will be require so it will be worth getting the right gadget to do a good job).

I have a 'cheap' 12volt drill which seems a bit too powerful - in starting to drill the drill bit 'bounces' and does not bite into the wood immediatly

Tempted to try a Archimedean Drill Stock

Any hints please??

Currently a month into the build and have just started the copper tiles - 'great' fun looking forward to finishing them in a week (or twos??) time

Thanks in advance
Julian

Hi Julian,

An Archimedes pin vice drill is a valuable piece of any builders arsenal of tools and one that will serve you well for this purpose.

Hi Julian

You may also like to try the Pin Vice. I found them easier to use/control when drilling numerous holes in my Victory. about the same price as the Archimedes.

One thing to note there is an additional chuck "hidden" in the handle. Took me weeks to accidentally discover this when changing drill bits one day. The handle came appart and bingo an additional chuck stored in the handle.

one hint and tip I keep giving,is the drills are expensive and break easily, use dress makers pins, cut of the head and the cut end is the the drilling end, saves a fortune.works with a power drill and pin vices.
Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory
Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat.
