Started with the port side, sanded it down and filled with wood filler. Will sand down tomorrow and hopes it comes out the same as the starboard side! Regards Kobus

Your build encourage me to continue. I am still on the bottom side of the hull, planning the cannon ports. This is an intrigue part of the build which can ruin my build. I have still a lot of years in my body left, therefor I have ample time to finish it. Overall your build looks fantastic. Lots of TLC displayed here Marcel Hi Marcel Thanks for looking in and the nice comments. I'm currently busy cutting and FILING the gunports! You must be so careful with the measurements, I started on the port side and marked and cut the first gunport just to realise that my measurements are WRONG ! Luckely I used a sawblade in the Dremmel and was able to glue the piece back in place! Moved over to the starboard side and made double sure everything is correct. The first line is now completed, jusy the filing to the correct size. Regards Kobus

Hi all A small update. Completed the gunports on the starboard side. Decided to follow Dominic's lead and fit the gunports before I start with the second layer of planking. I laminated strips of basswood together to get planks of 12 and 13 mm. Then I cut the long edges to 45' and then glued them all together to obtain a box for the gunports. Once dried I cut it in 5 mm strips and dry fitted each one into a gunport. This is the result: I'm planning to glue it in place, do the final sanding and once both sides are finnished will paint it red. Regards Kobus

You are making good progress, Kobus. I approve of the idea of doing the gun ports now. The veneer is very thin and leave little room for errors. Remember to drill a small centre marker for the dummy guns while you busy making the ports. You can refer to the Victory build for more ideas on this. You must be relieved that the first layer of planking is done. Mine has become a daunting job. Thanks Marcel and Alan for looking in and the nice comments! I'm not going to use the supplied 0.6 mm veneer, I'll be cutting my own 1 mm sapele for the top and 1 mm maple for the bottom. Will have a look at the Victory builds for the dummy guns. Regards Kobus

Looking great Kobus If you want absolute authenticity with the ports the top and bottom cill should be parallel to the waterline athwartships.I have developed a new manufacturing technique for gunport surrounds like this on the MF70 enabling perfect squareness and consistancy within 5/100 of a mm.I haven't posted anything anywhere yet but will do fairly soon. Kind Regards Nigel

Must say the FET table saw worked well cutting the 45° angles. Regards Kobus

Good day all I'm back to my build after a month! Was on holiday in the Western Cape and now I'm sitting at home due to the Platinum Mine Strike in South Africa! Will use the time to catch up on my build! I'm behind a number of issues as I decided to cut my own planks, sapele for the top and maple for the bottom! Finished with the starboard side sapele, now busy with the port side. Below is the results. Regards Kobus

jase wrote:Second planking looks good Hi Jase Thanks for looking in and the nice comment. The completed side was sanded down to a smooth finish. I'm considering using a white wood filler on the sampele for the treenailing and a darker one for the maple. Regards Kobus
