Hi All,

Just a question in regards to the Upper Gearbox cover in issue 41.

I have done everything by the book but it seems the diff gears are having slight contact with the top of the gear box cover, I was just wondering if this is normal or if when the drive shafts and axels are installed will hold down the differential gear set just enough to not make contact with the top of the gearbox cover.

I have loosened the screws of the Top cover but this does not make any difference. Can still hear a slight scrape as I turn either output shaft.

BTW, loving the build, would prefer to have everything sooner, but it’s a exciting time of the month to receive the next issues.

Thanks

Kent.

Hi Kent,

If the diff assembly is properly seated, the crown gear should not be in contact with the gearbox cover, and the diff assembly firmly held in place.

Perhaps you could post a photo of your build, with and without the cover in place?

Are you sure the gear is rubbing on the underside of the cover and that it is not the sound of the gear meshing with the drive gear?

Thanks for the reply Tomick

After reading your reply I went and took off the top gearbox cover and inspected the diff assembly. With the top gearbox cover off, spinning the diff assembly made minimal sound. I flipped the diff assembly into the top gearbox cover and spun the assembly once again with minimal sound. When putting everything back together I noticed one of the bearings for the diff wasn't 100% square and once spinning would have a slight wobble. After fixing this and with everything back together there is hardly any sound, just the sound of the gears making contact like you suggested.

Once again thanks for your reply, and your advice. Have been reading the posts on the forum since the beginning of my build, its great to know there is a place to come if we have any questions.

Not directly related to your problem but something I noticed which could worry some people. There is a bit of noise from the gears when turning the rear wheel hubs before the rear shocks are fitted. This is just because the rear shocks are not there yet to hold them in place.
