Hi All I was going to go for a natural finish using a stain ,medium oak to be precise [ see pic ] but im not happy with it, its too dark and the insides of ships would be painted. So after a little research I have decided paint will be the option im taking for the insides and a varnish on the outsides. Early 18th century ships of the Royal Navy were mostly painted green on the sides and roof of the main decks and a light blue was used in the officers quarters. The decks would be bleached white from the daily Holy stoning done by the crew to keep all spick and span. Bleached decks wont be an easy option to reproduce so I will leave the decks in there natural light colour but the rest will be painted in a light green apart from the pillars which will be of oak stain. The gun carriages will be matt black and not the red as depicted in the kit pictures. Of course the above mentioned colours could be changed to the preferences of the captain aboard each ship and the availability of paint colours in the stores but it is a good indication of the majority of ships internal colours. regards Andy arpurchase attached the following image(s): Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi All After deciding paint was the way to go I have spent the day undercoating and laying down some coats of paint but in between I managed to make up the two grating boxes for each deck. Personally I think it looks better painted but will look better once some planks go down but each to his own. Hi All Managed to do some of the lower deck today and used the panart way to trenail which came out looking ok I think with I little pencil lead to highlight them. The lower grating has been added and there is till some planking to add around it. Hi Adrie Thanks for looking in and your comments, your question about the Panart way of trenailing is good for larger planks like those used in this kit but may be a little to fiddly for thinner or smaller planks. Here's how then mark at right angles with a pencil across the plank then use a razor saw to cut to a depth of about a third of the planks thickness, this will form the joint. Then use a 1 mm drill in a pin vice to drill the trenails three on each side of the plank in this instance going to a depth of roughly the same as the razor saw cut. Now comes the darkening/shading bit use a sharp point soft lead pencil B6 to fill the cut and drilled holes, this gives it the definition and look's quite good. Whether it is usable for the Surprise, I do not know yet, not having seen the deck planks of that ship but I hazard a guess that they would be too small for that. The decking and treenailing looks great Andy. Is this model based on any particular ship or is it a generic type kit? Steve

Hi Steve The kit is more generic based on a typical English fighting ship of the early 1800's, I think CMB also say the gun cariages are walnut but mine are ply not too worried as mine will be painted. Your question on the decks is they will be staying the colour they are without stain as on a real ship of the period the decks would be Holy stoned each day which would render them almost white or bleached .The bleaching would be hard to replicate and at the same time look authentic I may experiment with a white wash but as I have already said above just varnish regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
