I think I have a problem. I'm about half way through lining the gun ports and I've noticed how mine seem to protrude further into the ship than others that I've seen on build diaries. I've re checked the instructions which say take the birch wood strips that came with issue 39. The strips that came with my issue 39 are 5mm wide. There are also some strips with my issue 38 which are just over 3mm wide and look like they would've been more suitable. Can anyone help me and tell me which strips I should use? Worst case scenario is I've used the wrong strips and they need to come out (not easy), and I've used 5mm strips which I might need somewhere else on the build. Very frustrating as I'm finding this a time consuming part of the build. Many thanks Paul Building - Sovereign Of The Seas

Further to my last, if you look at the back of magazine 38 it shows a picture of what you get in issues 38 and 40. This looks like what I've got, strips in 38 are definitely narrower. Maybe I'm stressing over nothing?? Building - Sovereign Of The Seas

Hi Paul, Widest strip wood supplied is 5mm Gun port linings should be inset by 0.2mm and if memory serves me right The bamboo hull planking is 2mm thick, so you should have 3mm projecting Inside the hull. Hope this helps Regards delvoy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Hi Paul, can say you are using the correct strips at 5mm wide but there is nothing to stop you using narrower strips if you have them spare... I used the 5mm strips on my build and it is true to say that where they are visible on the inner bulwarks then you will have to trim and sand them back after the inner lining has been put in place..... Continue as you are as you are doing nothing wrong.....  Hope this helps.. Regards Alan

I was convinced I'd gone wrong, but maybe not. Just had a closer look at your build diary Alan an the amount your upper row protrudes looks the same as mine. Is it just a case of sanding these down? Obviously the lower ports can't be sanded back due to access. I still can't help thinking this might be an error in the instructions as the narrower strips provided with issue 38 would be better suited and I can't see where else these are used. I fully agree with the others: I think there must be an error in the instructions, perhaps a printer's mistake. The 11 basswood 1x3x300mm strips supplied with issue 38 are obviously much better suited to use as gunport linings than the 18 birchwood 1.5x5x300mm strips supplied with issue 39. And it clear from the photographs of the waist area (e.g.in issue 45) that the linings do not project very far.
However, before I do anything I might regret, can you confirm that the strips supplied in issue 38 were not intended for some other purpose?
