Thanks for the comments all, much appreciated, been doing the first planking on the main ship, made a jig to help with the measuring of internal decks and gun ports, going to line the ports with mahogany because of its natural colour. I ordered the mahogany from Cornwall model boats ltd but they sent the wrong stuff, sent an e-mail to rectify the order with no response and cant get through on the phone, except to leave a message, has anyone else had any poor dealing with Cornwall model boats ltd willz attached the following image(s):

Hope you get it sorted. Regards Alan England expects that every man will do his duty.

Hi Willz, looking good I'm trying to understand how the jig helps with the gunports and decks etc - can you please post how it work, looks interesting. CMB have always been very good, I have had to return stuff to them and ahve let them know by email, they do respond but they take a few days Cheers Steve

OK stevie_o the jig. Because of the shape of the hull its easier to measure down rather than up, also need to measure down for the decks. So what I did was to scan and copy the side of the ship from John McKay`s book then printed it all out on separated A4`s, (about 7) at the scale I required (1/72) then taped them together on a piece of mdf making sure they all lined up correctly and at the same time they had to be taped to the mdf so that the scanned drawings were the exact same distance from the top of the mdf as the ship is from the top of the level on the jig, sounds complicated but makes things easier, OK to explain The first pic shows the ship being held exactly vertical with the centre line on the jig, Next I use digital callipers to measure down from the top of the mdf to the rear corner of the gun port (pic 2) Then lock the callipers with the side screw, no need to take any notice of the actual measurement (pic 3) Then sit the bottom edge of the calliper on the level so as to use its stem (this is the same measurement), so now I am measuring exactly vertical to the gun port (pic 4) And the last pic shows the calliper stem, here you can see I'm using a plank to pin to the side for marking, the plank was previously marked out horizontally from the full scale plan. Hope this helps Well thats me off for a weeks hols cheers Willz willz attached the following image(s):

CMB came good with my order, very pleased with their response, on with the build Just about finished cutting out the gun ports in the port side (no hair left). Checking on the position and size of the gun ports was certainly confusing, the drawings show the bottom and middle gun ports the same size whilst photos show the middle ones slightly smaller, so its just a matter of personal choice so I went with smaller middle ones, also the positioning varies very slightly from drawing to drawing (even in the same book) so I just stuck to the same drawing, I decided not to cut them square, instead I followed the deck line, I will be posting some photos the tedious routine I used. In the mean time here`s a photo of how close I came to blowing holes in the hull through sanding willz attached the following image(s):

Ok on with the gun port linings, first the linings were cut out of mahogany at the width to represent the thickness of the hull on their respective decks, (pic), using a combi square to hold them level width ways I glued in the full row of bottom lining pieces, (you can see in the photo I have placed my builders level across my jig, this enables me to square down in both directions) (pic), then when those were set I inserted a spacer into the gun port and glued in the top piece (pic), I blobbed a piece of scrap behind the top inside for strength, (pic) after they were set I again used my T rusty combi square to make sure the first side piece was plumb, (pic) and then used another spacer to set the other side piece. (no pic) willz attached the following image(s):

Looking good, i hope my hull looks as good once complete. I'm putting off my gun ports as long as I can, I've done one row and it was a horrible job lol Current builds: HMS Victory, hachette black pearl, DC-3, R2-D2, Millennium Falcon

cheers for the comments lads appreciated on with the build Got a bit fed up with the linings, think the other side will have to wait a bit, did manage to do some dummy cannon carriages for the lower deck, not going to go into any measurements and hope that the pics will tell most of the story, OK the first pic shows the centre base of the carriage, you will notice that it hasn`t been cut square, its got a small angle to allow for the shape of the carriage, this then only needs one cut to get the shape required, after cutting all 30 to this shape i then made a jig to cut down to size,I kept the off cut to use as the wedge. I`d already cut the sides just needed to shape them, so made a jig to cut the angle, then with the dremel in my spindle attachment I cut in the half rounds for the cannon to sit in,, so at this point I now have all my main bits for the carriage, I just needed to glue them together, another jig was used for this, I placed both sides of the carriage in the jig and glued in the tapered base from the rear, so that the carriage can only be the correct external size, (that of the jig) left them to dry then placed in my dummy cannon so as to glue in the off-cut wedge, this is the point that will determine how the cannon angle sits, think I will have them pointing up slightly but not going to be too accurate, all thats left to do now in glue in a small finishing piece at the front and thats it, could always do more work to make them look better but the last pic shows how they will look in the ship and I'm happy as they are willz attached the following image(s):

Summer over so back to it, finished cutting out all the gun ports. Before double planking starts I decided to have a look at the quarter galley arrangement, The drawings for these are at best as clear as mud, looks like photos will be my main guide, first I cut out the galley doors, then lined them leaving a small lip so I could butt up the second planking (see photo), I have no idea if they will be visible after the windows are fitted but its all good practice, willz attached the following image(s):
