Hi All,  I think I`ve made it to a point now where I can start the basics of the layout. I will be building the Lancaster as the final part of this dio, as I don`t want it laying around to get dusty/damaged. The smaller detailed parts will be easy to keep in boxes etc to keep them ready for the final display. So to that end here is several pieces of paper laid out to give you the idea of final layout size (24" x 36").Pic 1 Ok so I here the "Yep that`s basic". Here`s some detail: There will be two nissan huts (second shown by roof section) Top right will be the emergency services area, where the chassis is (fire tender and ambulance) Not one, but three anderson shelters Lancaster completed  Service vehicles around plane, plus supplies ( oil drums, ammo cases etc) Ground crew and aircrew Runway area, around and forward of the plane and I think finally Flag area (RAF + Union Jack) with the odd bit of lighting. Here`s some more of the detail to date.Pic 2 Now as for the vehicles you may think that the detail at 1:72/1:76 would be minimal, NO! This work will not be on show, but I know it`s there  .Pic 3 Well that`s it for now, my eyes are about shot, so may be a couple of days before the next update. Really liking this Del, especially now we can see the general layout. Reminds me that I did a dio when I was a kid with the airfix lancaster and the groud crew / fuel trailer etc - nothing like as good as yours will be though. Look forward to more Steve

Hi All, I need to start looking at the base of this dio and there`s one thing that some guidance may not go amiss on. Having visited a couple of ww2 airfields recently, they have cement/concrete squares for the runway, approx 10 feet square, so can anyone tell me if there is a specific item on the market that will reproduce the look of this surface. Hi Del On a dio I once did I made the concrete squares from very fine sandpaper, sprayed the colour of choice then washed over with black or umber. You can also have a little grass in the joints between them. Steve

Hi Andy, Many thanks for the link. I have looked at these and similar items, but the thing that has always stopped me getting some is that I wear varifocal lenses in my glasses and I`m not sure how well it would work with my prescription glasses. That said I do have a magnifier with a flourescent tube in it, which works well, but I think the real issue is trying to do to much in one session . If anyone has used the item on the above link with varifocals could you please let me know how you get on with it. Thanks for the info Andy. Hi Derek, Just read your post about your Varifocals, as these are a progressive powered lens which means you have: 1 Distance vision in the top. 2 Intermediate vision in the middle. 3 Reading vision at the bottom. So this is a progressive type of lens that needs a power channel of 18mm this starts from the centre of your pupil to the bottom of your lens that is your full RX. Now if you use one of these head set over the top of your Varifocals you will expect to experience a swim effect this is where objects appear to rock slightly when coming into the field of view, the reason is that you are adding unwanted power that in not prescribe, the answer is to stay with single vision lenses to your prescription. Hi Derek, great work as usual and loving the build to date..... .. I too wear varifocals all day long and when it comes to close up work on my builds I use one of these headbands and find it to be simply invaluable.... The headband has interchangeable lenses but I find the use on only one (x4) is perfect for most of the close up work I do, it also has a built in led lamp but find I don't use that very often.... in all honesty, I wouldn't be without my headband magnifier, and have had no adverse affects through using it,,,,, Hope this answers your question....
