Hi all,

in my preparatory search for information on ship building, before I start on the Surprise, I came across a planking beginners guide from 2006.

Does anyone know it, use it or have comments about it???

The guide, which is copyrighted, can be found below and is the Simple Hull Planking for Beginners pdf.

Beginners Planking Guide

Any advice will be appreciated.

I agree with Steve its a great document. I have read a number of books on this now and it is still amoungst the best I have read.

Hi guys, thanks for the responses.

Do you use all the techniques shown in it? I am 'struggling' with rabbetting and wonder if all builders here do it.

With struggling I mean I can not see myself creating a rabbet that is not going to show up after the garboards and planks have been placed. Are there any 'rules of thumbs' people use regarding the size of them?

Adrie.

hi adrie, It is an excellent tutorial, I think it is a bit too far advanced for the new builder, the rabbit(rebate) of the keel can be done other ways, most beginners will be using filler,so you can butt planks to the keel instead of rebating. bevelling and tapering the planks is something you must persevere and learn this skill, the general rule in tapering is, no less than 1/2 width tapering at the end of the plank.if more is needed then use droppers to get the result needed.getting complicated now,so will shut up.in general follow the instructions to the letter.and if in doubt, ask.
Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory
Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat.
