hi george,good progress so far, just a slight inquiry, is the false keel in line? the last two ribs at the stern end look out of alignment,could be camera angle,but just check. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Hi karl, Re false keel what you are seeing is the recess hole from balsa inserts next to keel making dark shadow and looks line off centre. If you check some of my earlier pics from higher angle you'll see it is straight. Saw the same thing myself in pic burt checking shows still ok. Pic below. Regards George1 Building HMS SOTS

Hi bb1949 Have now sanded braces to shape for next rib. Used a Dremel sanding head. Not what you'd call easy. Would have been if loose and not stuck in place. However it really seemed stupid to have to go to that trouble if we were told earlier could have cut to shape. Regards George1 Building HMS SOTS

Hi bb1949 You're welcome. However, always double check anything I might come up with as logic doesn't always prove true. As we both now know regarding my original thoughts of curvature problems only to find next frame to come in future did not fit to bottom of keel as expected. Regards George1 Building HMS SOTS

Hi Ted It's not the rib frame it's the brace pieces over join in issue 7. The next rib frame to come in later issues doesn't go to bottom of the false keel. It ends some 1 plus inches up from bottom. If you look back above my post you'll see where I've sanded the braces to rough shape in readiness. I'll be doing a full balsa infill later after first decking so I have sanded back a little more than required at front of brace to cover with balsa which I'll then shape to curvature of the rib frames. Hi George I too have completed up to Issue 7 and I am confused as to why you cut away part of the brace plate at the keel join. Is it really the case that Bulkhead #26 does not reach the bottom of the false keel? How does this impact planking installation? Will the planking not continue to the end of the false keel - piece #23? Hope Mr T and the others read this and can offer some assistance as I have glued the brace plates in place. I only became aware of this forum a couple of days ago so have got this far without assistance!! LoL as they say...

Hi John If you look at post 82 from bb1949 this page you'll get a better idea of the next rib frame finishing some 1 inch plus above the bottom of keel. The one after even higher. Yes the planking will go to the end of the keel but there is a curvature down till it reaches what you may call the bottom flat section. If the braces were left as is then you would get a hump that the planking would have to go over if those braces are not sanded as shown in bb1949's number 82 post. In later issues you will be shown to sand away part of the braces over join as shown in bb1949's post. Look at issues 16 to 20 Tommick's Official Build Diary. We agree that it would have been easier to do before gluing the brace pieces over the join. Hope this helps. Regards George1 Building HMS SOTS

Thanks George Pity I wasn't aware of this sooner. I don't have any power tools, I'll have to figure a way to trim it. On another topic, how do you get photos on to your posts? I ticked the attachment box and nothing happened.

Hi George, coming along very nicely so well done.... You are correct to fair the bracing piece, this is to ensure you have a smooth flow around that section when it comes to planking. An awkward process but it is needed.... .. Keep up the good work, will be following your progress. Regards Alan

George, there is a method behind the madness of fairing this part above. You need to dry fit the last rib #27 and gauge the profile with a bamboo plank to get the correct fairing line. It is essential that the plank sits tight and smooth at this section to get a smooth profile. It is rather difficult to fair this piece after #27 has been glued in place. As a Newbie I've got to be a little careful though with any advice I give regarding the build as I don't want to lead anyone astray. Appreciate greatly your input. I can see the stern is complex and I'll be looking for any help I can get at that stage. It feels as if I'm going to be entering the ring against a powerful foe looking at the build regarding planking. I'll either win or lose. Regards George1 Building HMS SOTS
