Many thank Tomic for the medal, It will be worn with pride! Also I appreciate you watching and letting us know our progress karl1113.
I did double check my alignment and all is good and square! (phew!)
Plus my apologies for not responding to each of you a little while ago but I was getting quite excited about the building program and simply overlooked your kind thoughts and comments.

bb1949 wrote:Yes I was able to find the revision later in the formal build diary and added pics to your post fro reference. I have made the corrections and everything is in line and square so still on track. Yes obviously instructions could have mentioned the cut off or even had been lazered to shape already. Anyway not that much problem sanding away. I'm going to have heaps of sanding once decking comes and I do full balsa infill. You can see my stack of balsa in background re pics. I forgot to add the other build which explains the sawdust in the background of my last pic. Yes I noticed your stocks of balsa..probably explains why Bunnings is sold out over here Between the pair of us that is! bb1949 attached the following image(s):

Hi bb1949 Your balsa infills look really good so you'll have no problems with the SOTS. I had looked in earlier but only wording re balsa stocks no pics. Looked again and they were there. I've added new brace sanding re my thread. Regards George1 Building HMS SOTS

Hi George and others. I thought I would give an update as the in between work in progress for the Sovereign. This is my other current project showing the completion of the infills and starting the planking. This 350 mm length two mast schooner will be double planked. The first plank is full width all the way and moulded via soaking in water and using a steam iron to work the plank around the bends. I am not very good with plank benders and prefer the steam method. I need to lay 15 planks more either side, and have worked out the proportions from the keel to deck along each 'bulkhead'. I think this will be a good practice run for what I see coming next issue of the Sovereign. I trust my showing this other project at the saem time as the Sovereign is acceptable. bb1949 attached the following image(s):

Coming along nicely. I am curious about what you are going to do with the personal touches on this build. I guess I have to keep an eye on your posts. "Rather try and fail than had failed to try".Sovereign of the Seas Model Space forum: Marcel's build

Hi Marcel. I just read some of your other posts and appreciate your input a lot. I am not yet sure about how I might achieve personal touches but you have given me something to think about. I am sure this will come through on both builds consciously or otherwise.

Hi bb1949 Your infill on model looks really good. I don't think anyone would worry about a different model than SOTS being shown as it is the balsa infill we are interested in besides the model itself. You've shown how it is done and smoothed to shape and a very good job too. All very helpful to us Newbies who plan to infill SOTS with balsa. Regards my friend. George1 Building HMS SOTS

Found some time to start the skiff with the following results. I am thinking about putting the planks on and using balsa infills for the bow over the coming week but only after a bit of research using the build diary in this forum. Progress so far follows bb1949 attached the following image(s):

Been to the build diary and found the skiff occurs regularly for quite a few issues. I saw in one of the later issues that the skiff has a tiny fore deck / spray deck and nothing to suggest I could use balsa infills unless I was prepared to grind them out after the planking was complete. Does any one have suggestions on this. i.e. should I use infills and take them out at later date of just forget it. Or simply do outer side of the stem / cutwiter See pic for visual explanation. bb1949 attached the following image(s):

Hi BB, you do not need balsa infills for any part of the launch, using them will likely cause you problems further down the line... I covered the launch quite extensively in my build diary, link below.. Take a look, you may find it helpful.... http://forum.model-space...osts&t=5013&p=8

Many thanks Grandale. I agree there would be issues for me down the way. I will go to your build as suggested and go from there. All the best.

Hi Grandale, Me again and just reviewed your build from page 8 plus. I can see what you mean about the bow. Thanks for that. I liked the way you finished the skiff off. Very impressed indeed. I will start planking tomorrow (I hope) and report progress. Brex

Sorry for the deleted message but I had some images about the skiff that could have led someone astray and resulted in a poor outcome. I had used mini pegs to hold the first plank in place but I later found that the pressure warped the plank, bowing it between each rib which is unacceptable.

Found time to do the skiff but looking at this photo...well lets just say it isn't seaworthy Looks like a bit of filler is needed. bb1949 attached the following image(s):

Hi bb1949 Your Row Boat looks very good. Previous experience planking shows. Re filler I had to fill a few places mainly tiny spaces but yours looks like it won't need much. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Thanks George, My main problem was the bow and getting the planking in line without creating a hump took a bit of work mainly because I hadn't done the forming of the bow supports properly. My planking was done a little differently to what the instructions will tell me and I had bit of problem on the port side (which is where the planks didn't butt up) due to having to replace one of the planks which then in the reflected in the gaps. Also the centre planks were slightly off line. I have applied some gap filler and here is the result. I am not worried about the finish as this will be airbrushed bb1949 attached the following image(s):

Also done a little more planking on the other project. Don't worry about the pins etc as this is to be double planked. But need to get the alignment right on both bow and stern. Aim is to fit 16 planks being 5mm wide but must shape each end of the plank so all fit equally. I am soaking each plank over night and using a steam iron to shape the bow and stern, holding the plank amid ships and then pinning either side as I bend the plank around to the desired shape. This is a lot easier to do then the skiff!. bb1949 attached the following image(s):
