Here's how I made my clove hitches:

Photo 1. I started at the left hand side and with the end of the thread held to the left took the rest of the thread, with the needle, across to the right in front of the shrouds.

Photo 2. With the thread across the shroud take the needle and place it from right to left behind the shroud and under the thread that is across the front.

Photo 3. The thread should now go around the shroud and come out under itself.

Photo 4/5. Now take the needle and place it from right to left behind and over the thread, DON'T pull it tight, but leave a small loop.

Photo 6. Take the needle and from the left thread the needle through the loop and pull all the way through.

Photo 7. The knot stretched out so you can see how it goes around the shroud.

Photo 8. Ease the knot together and tighten it to the shroud, before you tighten it completely to the shroud, ease it into place with the point of the needle and then pull it to lock it into place.

When I've done several rows I coat all the knots, ratlines and shrouds with dilute pva glue to hold them in place, you can also use the point of the needle to put 'droops' into the ratlines and then when the glue is dry they keep their shape.

Enjoy your Build

Thanks to Caroline.

What an excellent and splendid example of an operation that is going to take place on everyones build, this is precisely the type of example us newbies need to give us every chance of completing a very good model. Thankyou...

Hi Magpie, yes, I have attached the lateen sail in a satisfactory fashion, but it seems to be taking a long time, I have tied the knots one at a time, but this seems to waste a lot of thread and I was wondering if some sort of running knot could be used instead, thank-you.

Hi Allan,

There is a jig out there but its Pants...
Every Ship is different in width of ratline because it depends scale and how many Shrouds aswell. Its actualy easier to do them as you go along..

hi chris.. i bought the amati jig but found the size did not really suit the model being constructed so i now do each individually to suit the ship in question.
