G'day all,

Have had a problem with ribs warping before and after gluing together before assembly to the false keel. Some have warped up to 5mm across the rib from top to bottom. I have tried, after removing from the laser cut sheet, placing them on a flat surface and putting a board on top with weights on to keep them flat. I glue the pieces of rib that need gluing and then place on the flat surface and weigh them down under a board with weights to keep them flat again. I use greaseproof paper to stop the ribs sticking to the flat surface after gluing.

But, before I assemble them to the false keel, they are warped.

I tried steaming with the wife's iron on one and then weighting it down again. It seems to be working except I need to clean the PVA off the iron. You reckon that has got me in trouble!

Any ideas please!

Hi Shaky
The methods you are using to remove the warp generally will work. Are these issues coming to you with this amount of warp damage or have you been collecting the issues for some time? It may be that if you are storing the parts then they may be subject to large changes in temperature or perhaps they are being stored stacked with weight pressing on them?
Usually placing the frame between 2 pieces of glass after moistening the concave side of the warp will do the trick if left to dry while it's the glass press, so at least overnight.

hi shaky, it sounds like you are building in an unstable environment, i.e. temperature fluctuations, if you have to press the ribs, ensure you clean off the pva first,do this by using a warm damp cloth, then press them, the ribs need to be thoroughly dry before using pva, as a footnote I would only glue them when you have the lower decks to hand,as this aids the locations of the ribs in the slots on the decking, which helps to keep things square and warp free, hope this helps.
