Issue 84 - Contains diecast stern statuettes, diecast cleats, wooden belay pins and brass rings.

Take the 1.5x1.5x300mm strips that you painted gold in the previous assembly session. These strips are for a series of cornices to be placed vertically along the hull.

Cut to fit two pieces of strip. Glue them vertically on the left-hand side of the hull, at the edge of a gun port, between the railings above and the horizontal cornice below.

In similar way, fix pieces of strip cut to size at the sides of all the gun ports of the upper deck. Also, fix three strips on the side edges of the forecastle.

Now, with 15 pieces of strip cut to size, make the vertical cornices of the stern section of the hull, following the measurements shown in the Step 4 instructions photo. Complete the vertical cornices of the stern area, fixing four more pieces of gold strip under the upper quarterdeck, in the position and at the distance shown in the step photo.

Prepare a series of pieces of 2mm strips. Glue them under the vertical cornices, placing them beyond the horizontal cornice that runs along the bottom edge of the gun ports of the upper deck.

Cut to fit two 1.5x1.5x300mm pieces of gold strip and fix them along the edges of the bottom planking of the beak, following the measurement shown in the step 8 photo.

With gold strip, make the 13 vertical cornices of the upper and lower planking of the beak. First, put on the outer strips and then the next, keeping to the measurements shown.

With a fine paintbrush, paint the outer edge of the strips on the sides of the bulkheads at the edge of the quarterdeck and poop deck gold.

Repeat to fit the same strips onto the right-hand side of your model.

Take the diecast cleats, remove any burrs then give them a coat of metal primer, then paint them a wood colour. Do not paint the base as this may prevent glue adhesion to the deck.

Apply a small amount of glue on the bases of six cleats and fix them on the upper quarterdeck, following the arrangement, orientation and the measurements shown in the instructions.

Glue ten more cleats on the quarterdeck. The instructions photo shows you the position of the pieces, their orientation and the distances to be kept to. (Store the nine remaining cleats for a later assembly session).

Remove any burrs from the statuette parts, then assemble the two statuattes as shown. Coat all three statuettes with metal primer then paint them gold.

The belay pins and 2mm-diameter rings will be used in a later assembly session. Keep them carefully, together with the other unused pieces and the statuettes.

Issue 85 - Contains diecast stern decorations, brass mesh, wooden strips and parts for the upper quarterdeck rails.

Use a fine file to remove any burrs from the diecast parts, then paint coat them with metal primer and paint them gold

Take decoration PA47 and glue beneath the stern lantern, ebnsuring it is centred.

Take piece PA48, glue on the transom in the position shown in the instructions, centring it carefully.

Now, take the three transom statuettes PA44, PA45 and PA46 that you received, assembled and painted in Issue 84.
Glue statuette PA45above piece PA48 in a central position. Then fix the two statuettes PA44 and PA46 on the transom, the first to the left and the second to the right of the statuette PA45.

Take the stern decoration PA49, glue it on the left-hand side of the transom, in the position shown in the instructions, (the second piece is a spare, PA50 is fitted in issue 86 onto the right-hand side).

Making the quarterdeck grille:

Take the two strips of birch that came with this issue and smooth them with a fine-grained sanding-block. Then cut one of the birch strips in half to get two pieces, each 150mm long.

Take the shaping tool provided with Issue 73, and using the slot shown in the instructions, shape the outline of one of the two pieces of 150mm-long strip, then smoth the strip to remove any iregularities and paint it a Sapele colour.

Cut the shaped strip into four segments, two of which are 57mm long and the other two 15mm long.

Make a 45 degree cut on the ends of the four segments. Before making the cuts, look closely at how the parts are to be assembled in Step 19.

Join the four pieces of strip to make a rectangular frame. Be careful: place the strips so that the most prominent part of their outline is inside the frame.

Paint the second 150mm-long piece of strip a sapele colour, and when dry, cut five 10mm-long pieces from the strip.
Put a drop of wood glue on their ends, and fix the 10mm pieces inside the frame at a distance of 7mm from one another.

Take the brass grille that came with this issue, and cut it so that its sides measure 54x10mm.

Put a drop of glue on the back edge of the frame (the one without profiling) and fix it on the 54x 10mm brass grille.
The frame with the grille must be fixed on the wall in front of the upper quarterdeck. Check that it is perfectly centred and equidistant from the two side ladders. Then paint the front edge of the planking of the upper quarterdeck, black.

Making the upper quarterdeck rail:

Cut the two pieces of the rail of the upper quarterdeck from the die that you received with this issue, then remove any splinters and paint them a walnut colour, and paint the second 2x2x300mm strip of birch a sapele colour.
Using the 2x2x300mm strip, cut four pieces, two 15mm long and two 13mm long.

Put glue in all four slots on one of the two pieces of the railing. Then fix the two 15mm pieces into the outside slots and the 13mm ones in the two central ones.
Glue the second piece of the rail on the four pieces of strips that form the uprights. This piece should be flush with the two central strips.

Retouch the ends of the rail posts with sapele-coloured paint.

Put a small amount of glue on the base of the rail, and then fix it on the front edge of the upper quarterdeck in a centred position.

Carefully store the remaining piece of 2x2x300mm strip for another assembly session.

Issue 88 - Contains 4mm & 6mm double hole blocks and 6mm single hole rigging blocks.

Take the 11 belay pins that came with Issue 42 and the eight that you received with Issue 48. Give them a coat of metal primer. Then paint them a light wood colour and keep them safely aside for use later in this stage.

Making the belay pin racks:

Take the 2x5x300mm strip that came with Issue 42. Smooth it with a fine-grained sanding-block, the cut three pieces from it, two which are 22mm long and one piece 42mm long.

Draw a central line along the elnghth of both 22mm peices, then mark five points along the line following the measurements shown.

Drill five 1mm holes in each strip at the intersection points marked, then round off the corners of one of the longer sides of both racks.

Paint both racks a sapele colour. When the paint is fully dry, test-fit a belay pin into the holes o both strips, and if necessary, enlarge the holes.

The racks should be fixed onto the inside of the left and right bow panel. Apply adhesive onto the right-hand side of a rack, and fix the piece onto the inside of the right bow panel, following the measurements shown in the step photo. Then fix the second rack onto the inside of the left bow panel, in a position symmetrical to the first.

Take 10 belay pins that you have put aside. Glue five in the holes of the right-hand rack and the same number in the holes of the left-hand one.

To make the third rack, take the 42mm strip prepared earlier and mark a central line along its length, then draw two lines acrros both ends at the measurements shown. Cut two notches on the lines at the ends of the strip, smoothing them with a flat file.

Now mark seven cross lines 4mm apart on the strip, then drill seven 1mm holes at the intersection of the points marked.

Paint the strip a sapele colour. When the paint is fully dry, test-fit a belay pin into the holes o both strips, and if necessary slightly enlarge the holes.

Take one of the 3x3x300mm strips that came with Issue 67. Smooth the strip with fine-grained sandpaper and cut two segments 14mm long.

Paint the two 14mm segments (posts) a sapele colour, then glue the posts into the notches of the rack strip in the position shown in the instructions.

Complete the rack by gluing seven belay pins into the rack holes. Then glue the rack posts onto the deck of the ship in a centred position between the mainmast hole and 11mm from the grating.

Carefully store any remaining parts and the blocks.
