Gandale wrote:Nice looking work George, very well done.... Think you will now find the hull feels very solid plus the added advantage of doing the infills is you can now see clearly how the hull profile will look..... .. Keep the pics coming.... Regards Alan Hi Alan Thanks for your kind comments they are always appreciated. Yes The whole keel now feels very solid and rigid too. It's certainly not going to go out of shape as planking starts. And as you say the hull profile easy now to see. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

bb1949 wrote:Wow! You have moved on! Well done! I intend to do the infills as well over the next two weeks. Bow is done and I will work to the stern, alternating each side just in case I twist the keel. I think that shouldn't happen given the deck is in place but it is still humid over here and there is always that chance. Did you have any issue with glue line. I find it can be an effort to get an even finish between the softer balsa and the rigid glue. I use PVA what do you use. Brex Hi Brex. Re moving on quick. Don't forget I'm retired so have a lot more time on my hands than you do as a working guy. Re the glue lines between balsa. I used PVA, Yes the lines are harder between the balsa, however if you judge the waste profile re the rib frames and go much lighter on glue outside that profile it helps to overcome that problem. So long as the balsa inside of the rib profile is glued there shouldn't be a problem. Fit the pieces of balsa tightly and even if no glue on top surface they still sand off blending to one piece overall. Plus the balsa is going to be covered with planking so providing the sanded profile is correct it's not going to be seen anyway, Hope that's of some help. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hey George thanks for the tip on the PVA which I am using.Tonight I did as you suggested and kept the contact area below where I need to shape the infill. I am shaping the first section past the bow at the moment and it is easier to work. Are you able to get to Canning (Perth) during the week. If so I can send the book on planking to you. Brex. PS My wife reckons I'm near past retiring age so I might as well keep going especially now that I have added the Spitfire to my builds.

G'day George
Just been looking at your balsa infills and it's looking great. Which method did you use to immobilise the ship?

Unfortunately I've got problems with vehicle at the moment other than very short runs so can't get there and public transport a no go. However thanks heaps for the offer it is greatly appreciated. Yes. The "Spitfire" was one model of great interest to me. If I had won the contest re Tomick I would have chosen that. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Regards JohnP Hi John. I just used clamps on rib frames to hold one side then used finished side on bottom braced by heavy weight against frames. This only till I build clamp for planking, painting. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Thar' she blows! Hull full infill. I'm glad it's done other than maybe some more sanding stern when next rib frame comes and angle known. At the risk of being called a heretic it looks like a dead whale upside down now. Regards George Building HMS SOTS

Hi George, The balsa infills look really good, but I`m hoping that in the last pic you put up there is an optical illusion. Looking from the stern as this pic is, the second rib looks out of line on the left hand side. You can check this by placing a short straight edge across three/four ribs, it looks like the second rib is inset from the others. I`m hoping that it`s an illusion, but if I`m right the issue can be corrected, so don`t hit the panic button. I had the same issue on my build and produced a "know how" on how to correct it. If it`s wrong, it needs correcting now before you proceed further. Hope I`m wrong. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Issue 12 today now put together. Beams for 2nd deck looked a bit flimsy so put a balsa support every second beam. If any ribs look a little off it's only photo. Hard to hold camera steady without a tripod. Regards George Building HMS SOTS
