As a footnote to Tomick's post the letter has sold for £32,000 together with another three letters and a document signed by Nelson bringing the total to over £60,000. I think my bid of 50p wasn't quite enough  Whilst googling this, I discovered Letters and Dispatches of Admiral Nelson. These form a fascinating collection showing how a great Admiral like Nelson was not only concerned with considerations about high level strategy concerning the French fleet but details such as reminding his captains to check the weight of all fresh beef supplies coming on board and making officers responsible for the accurate recording of perishable stores.
