Well I have just finished the Victory's launch. As this is my first wooden ship build I thought it might be interesting to document what I had learned so far....
1. Hull planks are only so thick...stop sanding when you see the floor!
2. Tiny parts which you drop from the workbench automatically enter the fith dimension when they hit the floor only to re-materialize when you have finally given up looking for them!
3. The cost of the tools required to complete the Victory model will eventually exceed the cost of your house!
4. When you put your tools aways there will ALWAYS be one less than when you took them out!
5. Attention to detail appears to grow exponentially with time. After a few weeks you seriously consider investing in an electron microscope!
6 Brass does't like to be painted!
7. 5 million people could build the Victory model and every one of them would look better than yours!
8. Wood looks great until you paint it!
9. The cat's tail always finds the open paint pot.
10. If you knock over a pot of paint it will always be the black one.
11. Bread knives do not make good modelling saws!
12. After 5 hours of squinting through a maginfying glass you look like Popeye!
13. After 2 years of building the Victory model you will probably look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame!
14. The actual size of a millimeter mysteriously changes between the time you take a measurement and the time you cut the wood!
15. The probability of loosing a part of the kit is directly proportional to its importance!
16. The parts supplied by DeAgostini are always 3 mm less than what you need to finish the model!
17. After completing the Victory Model your swear box should pay off your mortgage!
Still...its all good fun (isn't it???)

know exactly how you feel ...... but try having a playful cat that will either chase, watch or pinch anything that moves or when you go to get extra tools , its amazing what can be found under the back of a chair especially when the cat has that look of innocence when you cant find the fidly bits current builds

hi mike..... suppose i am lucky in a way, my wife does scrapbooking as a hobby so understands the need to 'spread out'.. problem when we converted the third bedroom to a craft room is she took over (no room for me) so i end up with tables in the living room (where the cat loves to play)i permanently have a table sitting with loads of stuff in the corner.. unless visitors or the grandson arrives.. then ohhhhh current builds

o how that brings back memories, I have two cats!! double trouble who are banned from the workshop/craftroom/spare bedroom/junkshop. yes only one room has to take all this.tried a work schedule, but that works out 10min. aday for me.and the rest for the boss, thinking again how do I get more time? e-bay is the answer, flog her gear and I have half empty room, buy her a camera and dump her out in the peak district and pick her up at night, gives me more time,he he he,now she want's an other hard drive to put pics on.o well we some peace now. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

I don't mind -- it's just the women keep muttering about 'health and safety' wots that? Happy modelling Mike T

Quote:or the grandson arrives.. then ohhhhh Thankfully I don't have that problem...yet,although the eldest & his fiancee keep scaring us with "we may have some good news for you..grandad" i'm sure they do it just to wind me up!!I do have a 17 year old that likes to burst in with some life or death problem that has to be sorted out right there & then..right when i'm in the middle of something very delicate..last night I was battling with the pintles for the launch...lost count of how many I made & lost.Of course I musn't forget the odd baby seagull! As we are on the subject of build problems. Could you guys help me out here. I think I am missing part of the build instructions that my wife seams to have spotted because she keeps telling me "It's about time you got the Hoover out". I cant bloody find that anywhere. Bob

That's the nasty 'orrible sucking thing which removes all the bits of brass wire, carefully measured bits of wood, those other bits which might just come in useful when desperate etc. etc. I keep a small hand version with a loud motor in the office and make loud impressive noises with it from time to time and that tends to keep her quiet. I wonder if that is where my brass wire has gone?? Mike T

That really rang true for me. I wish that it were possible to have a seperate room where one could leave all the 'necessary' bits ready to use. It seems like I spend more time preparing my workspace and putting everything back again afterwards than I actually spend on the build itself. At least there is a large storage cupboard in the living room where 'she who must be obeyed' has 'allowed' me to berth the build as it progress's

I tend to leave all the modelling stuff out on the kitchen table. She who must be obeyed will come in and plonk the dinner down amongst the bits. I am sure that I have eaten a good percentage of the kit over the past few weeks....I'm really worried where the launch anchor has gone!!
