When you have a number of devices connected in series, the current through each device is the same. Think of water flow in pipes, the overall volume of water through each pipe must be the same otherwise there would be a build up of water somewhere in the loop.

When you connect devices in parallel, the current through different branches can be different, depending upon the resistance in each branch.

Yes, after thinking about it a while it would be ok. The principle is used on x-mas tree lights, all the bulbs are in series. However the overall voltage is a multiplication factor of the number of bulbs / LEDs. Right, time to find the person who pinched my thinking head....
