I have find this ship a beautiful peace of art and was wondering if anyone can advise of the difficulty in building it?
I have never built a wooden ship before infact I am only currently on my first ship (plastic New Tool Yamato), and model, in 18 years. I have been doing really well with my current build and am able to follow instructions to the letter.
I own a decent airbrush and compressor and am able to paint with a pretty steady hand.
So, realistically do you think this would be a project that i would be cabaple of completing to a decent standard?
Any comments welcommed

Hi Dave I'm not actually building the SOTS but I am doing the Victory and Santisima Trinidad. The Deagostini wooden ship builds are designed so that even a first timer can produce a very nice build. You will build up your skills as you progress through the issues and you also have the added advantage of reading ahead on other diaries to forsee any problems that you may encounter. The instructions in the mags are first class and explain every aspect of the build. So, yes - go for it, I'm sure you will do a great job Steve

Thanks for the comments Steve I have taken the plunge and added this to my subscriptions I am not going to be in a hurry to get started on this and will build up a few issues first. This mainly down to the fact that Yamato is taking up the space on my work bench at them moment.

Another Question already, has anyone had any experience with airbrushing the paints the DeAgostini sell. I'm using Tamiya X20A & Ultimate Airbrush Thinner from Ultimate Modelling Products and have a 0.2 & 0.4 needle

I have tested the Admiralty Metal Black paint with an airbrush and sprayed fine. I mixed with 1/3 water though as it tended to dry a bit quick on the nozzle with thinners. I got the water they sell at the garage for batteries etc, distilled or de-ionised? Anyway, I read that this is better than just tap water. I'm by no means an airbrush expert though as I have not had mine long but I have done many hours of testing with it Steve

Hi Dave, the SOTS is my very first build and like you I was full of concerns and doubts about my ability to take on such a project... Having joined this forum, reading up on the many differing diaries and taking the advice of those far more experienced, I can honestly say those concerns and doubts very quickly disappeared leaving me with no regrets in taking this on. The build instructions are superb and can easily be followed by any beginner providing they take their time and don't rush into things head first.... So pleased to read you have subscribed and look forward to seeing your progress as the issues go by... Remember, help is always here from all the members should you need it, you just need to ask.... Best of luck with it, you'll thoroughly enjoy it.... Regards Alan

Thanks for the comments all, I am looking forward to this arriving. I must admit i will not be starting it straight away as my current project is still in its early stages. Karl, My experience is from 18 years ago (I am 36 now) building some tanks, planes and a star ship enterprise, however these were all hand painted. I have only just taken the hobby back up, I started building at the beginning of April but was collecting tools etc for a couple of months before that, this was while I waited to be able to clear the garage of my first house that I purchased jointly with my fiance. Luckily the garage came with and old kitchen unit installed which has worked to be a very nice workbench / area My current and first project in 18 years is my 1/350 New Tool Yamato, you can see the build thread hereI do have a very cheap (£5) 1/720 USS Intrepid (CV11) which is used as a test bed for any techniques to try. I have been well and truly gripped by the hobby again and have some grand plans as can be seen by my SOTS subsribtions , as in my signature I also have a Revell USS Voyager which was a birthday present from the fiance, I plan to light this using LEDs, this will sit next to my LED lit Bandai Voyager on the shelf (I didnt build this and purchased already complete). Also a couple of Chibi-Maru ships (not everyones cup of tea), Akagi, Yamato & Kongo on order from Hobby Link Japan.
