Hi

can anyone recomend some kind of clearcoat to go over the top of carbon decal. it will have to be brushed on or rubbed with a cotton bud. i am looking for a satin or semi gloss finish over the decal and hopefully a protective envelope over it.

thanks for any suggestions.

Can I ask why it has to be brushed or rubbed on? I used Halfords Lacquer on all my carbon and had great results strait from the can leaving it to dry for 24 hours before sanding with 8000 grit micro mesh cloth.

If you have to rub it on then I can only recommend Tamiya modelling wax but apply lightly and build up the layers to get the shine you want.

Hi Warthog

the reason it has to be brushed on is that the car is pretty much finished and i wanted to coat the floor pan which has been covered in carbon decal, masking the rest up to spray would be a nightmare i think.

i had a funny feeling the wax would get mentioned, i just feel that the carbon needs a protective coat and a slight sheen. i used zero clearcoat gloss for the suspension etc but that was before they were put together, the floor pan needs a satin or similar effect i think as gloss would be too much.

The wax will do exactly that if applied correctly. I have used it on many models and extremely happy with the results. Due to the fact that you have already built your McLaren then I would say this is only one of two options. You can brush on with an Aquas clear coat but you will get brush strokes regardless.

Your welcome BigGrin just use the cloth provided (you should get one with it) and apply in small circular motions covering the area you want polished. Allow to dry for 5-10 mins then reapply to build up the layers or once happy buff to get the shine you want.
