Nice build log Andy I am going to be following this one closely as I have just today decided to change from the Sovereigh of the Seas (Issue 2 & 3 of SOTS have just been dispatched) to this as my first build. Loved the picture of the hull waiting the tapered bits to go in, being a complete beginner myself I find things like that very useful, any other extra information you can give during the build that is aimed at the complete novice like myself would be greatly received

Hi Dave Thanks for looking in and your comment's, Im glad that my diary has inspired you to build her, she is a great kit with lots of hard woods included. Good instructions and you get the x-section to build aswell. The only thing I would recommend Is some balsa infill between hull former 1 and 2 only , I have a slight flat spot here not really noticeable but I know its there, the infill will prevent this. Please feel free to PM me or ask questions on anything about the Trinny only too happy to help and will look forward to another diary when you start . Thanks for the tip with regards the balsa infills, I have read a few different SOTS builds so am confident I can manage that.
I have just been having another read through this build and you mention a couple of different varnishs used on the launch, I was just wondering what type of varnishes are used for wood.
Also to you use a varnish on things you have stained like the deck to protect them much the same way one would use on plastic models
Thanks Dave

Hi Dave Glad to be of help, as for varnishes there are water based and petroleum based as are wood stains either are good for our models as long as they are recommended for use on wood. I tend to use a lot of Rustin's products but that's only due to the fact I can get then cheaper round by where I live. Also keep in mind that gloss, satin and matt will give a different look to your model by the finish alone. On the launch I first used a spray satin varnish that did not give the required finish I was after so I used a water based matt varnish that gave the required finish. I have also mentioned the use of Shellac or French Polish ,there are things about Shellac that should be explained also, Shellac is produced from a small insect secreting a resin as a by-product, its this resin that is refined into shellac products. It is best mixed by yourself so you know it is fresh as it has a limited shelf life of around 12 months only, so that tin of pre-mixed Shellac could have been sitting on the shelf of your local DIY store for 12 months and so will be stale before its used. Stale Shellac will not dry properly and will stay sticky to the touch. Regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi All Small amount of progress as my scroll saw drive belt died so stopped me in my track's for an upgrade i was planing. So instead I decided to fix something that has been bugging me for a while, the inner bulwarks at deck level are the inner's of the ply gun port strips dyed with wood stain to make them look like hardwood. I had plenty of strip wood left from the lower hull planking and used this to transform the area in question , not a huge job but im more than pleased with the results. Note there is no varnish added as yet to this area as the whole area will soon be coated with matt varnish regards Andy arpurchase attached the following image(s): Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
